Things got personal the last time Donald Trump and Joe Biden shared a debate stage.
During the vicious 2020 debates, Biden told Trump to 'shut up' after his frequent interruptions, and they traded accusations on their personalities and records.
Down in the polls after a campaign upended by the pandemic, Trump called Biden 'corrupt' and brought up the 'laptop from hell.'
Thursday's prime-time contest on CNN is certain to feature other angry clashes, with Biden's team already calling Trump a threat to democracy and Trump's team asserting that Biden is on drugs – even though the two sides negotiated on rules that will diminish some opportunities for drama.
That could limit, or at least modify, some of the tense viral cross-talk moments.
President Donald Trump brought up the 'laptop from hell' at the presidential debate in Nashville in 2020
One such explosion took place when Trump and Biden met during the Cleveland debate, when Biden was asked about either ending the filibuster or 'packing the court' to get Democratic priorities through.
It was a move some Democrats were openly considering, after Trump helped cement a conservative Supreme Court majority that within years would overturn Roe v. Wade.
'The issue is, the American people should speak,' said Biden, side-stepping and urging people to 'go out and vote.'
'Are you going to pack the court?' Trump interjected. 'Are you going to pack the court?' he repeated.
'He doesn't want to answer that question. Why don't you answer that question,' Trump said, talking over his rival and accusing him of trying to install 'radical left' judges.
'Will you shut up man!' Biden finally exploded.
It got so tangled that interviewer Chris Wallace decided to move on to a new segment. 'That was really a productive segment, wasn't it?' Biden added mockingly.
Another came during the final debate, moderated by NBC's Kirsten Welker, when Trump called Black Lives Matter a 'terrible thing.'
'I think I have great relationships with all people. I am the least racist person in this room,' Trump declared, during an election season that featured protests over the death of George Floyd and tense debates over Confederate monuments.
'It makes me sad,' Trump said, pointing to criminal justice reform efforts he pushed through and other matters.
'I am the least racist person. I can't even see the audience because its so dark, but I don't care who's int he audience, I'm the least racist person in this room.'

Trump referenced the 'laptop from hell' and accused Biden of corruption
Biden responded with more sarcasm. 'Abraham Lincoln here is one of the most racist presidents we've had in modern history. He pours fuel on every single racist fire,' Biden said.
Trump used what was to have been the third 2020 debate (the second one got nixed after Trump got COVID and rejected a video contest) to hammer Biden on his son Hunter with information linked to his infamous laptop.
His 2016 victory over Hillary Clinton, who came out with an article pitching her debate advice, came amid a Russian hacking effort and accusations about Russia connections among Trump, his campaign, and associates.
'Joe got three-and-a-half million dollars from Russia and it came through Putin, because he was very friendly with the former mayor of Moscow, and it was the former mayor of Moscow's wife,' Trump said. 'You got three-and-a-half million dollars; your family got three-and-a-half million dollars. Some day you're going to have to explain.'
(Fact-checkers called the accusation unproven).
Trump was down in the polls at the third debate at Belmont University in Nashville, and tried to weaponize the bombshell Hunter Biden laptop story.
A key clash came after a question about race.
'If this stuff is true about Russia, Ukraine, China, other countries, a wreck-- If this is true, then he's a corrupt politician. So don't give me the stuff about how you're this innocent baby. Joe, they're calling you a corrupt politician,' Trump told Biden.
'President Trump, I want to stay on the issue of race. We're talking about the issue,' moderator Kristin Welker, who covered the Trump White House, scolded him.
'It's the laptop from hell. The laptop from hell,' Trump responded.
'I have to respond to that,' Biden interjected.
'Look, there are 50 former National Intelligence folks who said that what this, he's accusing me of is a Russian plan. They have said that this has all the characteristics-- four-- five former heads of the CIA, both parties, say what he's saying is a bunch of garbage. Nobody believes it except him, his, and his good friend Rudy Giuliani.
'You mean, the laptop is now another Russia, Russia, Russia hoax?' Trump mocked. 'Is this where you're going? This is where he's going. The laptop is Russia, Russia, Russia?'
Biden's reference to the letter from intelligence professionals hit a subject that still isn't settled.
The Republican-run House Judiciary Committee is probing the officials who signed on, after the laptop was confirmed to be Hunter's and even cited by prosecutors in court cases against him.
On Tuesday, it was revealed that some of the ex-intelligence officials were actively being paid by the CIA on a contract basis when they signed the letter that falsely claimed Hunter Biden's laptop was 'Russian disinformation.'
