America's best pizzeria revealed - and the state that reigns supreme for the popular Italian dish

America's best pizzeria has been revealed at a glittering award ceremony spotlighting the tastiest pies across the country.

Una Pizza Napoletana scooped the top prize in the prestigious 50 Top Pizza rankings for the USA.

The New York eatery was awarded the accolade for a third year in a row, with owner Anthony Mangieri 'visibly moved' by the honor.

'We are a small but mighty team, and we do not take for granted the support of our guests and friends all over the world who allow us to keep doing what we love,' the restaurant said following the win.

'Our goal has always been to push and be better every day and in everything we do; we are as committed as ever.'

Una Pizza Napoletana offers just six pies, one of which is a rotating weekly special. Prices are not stated on the website.

The spot is so popular that reservations only open two weeks before, with slots opening at 9am daily.

Dough is made each morning, with one pizza allocated per person. However, some select walk-ins are available.

The restaurant beat stiff competition from Tony's Pizza Napoletana in San Francisco, by Tony Gemignani which took second place and Joe Beddia's Pizzeria Beddia in Philadelphia taking third.

Mangieri's lower east side establishment has been running for almost three decades.

It specializes in, 'naturally-leavened, wood-fired pizzas,' according to the website but also offers a few appetizers, made-daily ice cream and seasonal sorbetto.

The pizzeria is in good company, with the Big Apple named the best city for pizza overall boasting a whopping 17 restaurants in the guide.

New York was followed by Chicago with seven, and Portland with six. 

The most represented state is New York, with 19 pizzerias featured in the guide, followed by California with 14 pizzerias, and Illinois with seven.

50 Top Pizza determines its winners by dispatching anonymous inspectors to assess each entry, weighing up factors such as the quality of the product as well as customer satisfaction. 

This year, in addition to the annual pizzeria list, the guide voted for the best pizza slice in the US for the first time ever. 

First place went to L'industrie Pizzeria, in New York, second to Slice & Pie, in Washington, and third to Taglio, in Mineola.

'We have made a significant effort to expand the 50 Top Pizza USA 2024 Guide to include 100 pizzerias,' stated the guide's 50 Top Pizza's curators Barbara Guerra, Luciano Pignataro and Albert Sapere.

'The American pizza movement is in great ferment, with a new generation of artisans increasingly focused on product quality and ingredients, which has gained strong momentum in the past year, including the introduction of tasting menus by many pizzerias.'

The winners were unveiled at an event in the Big Apple's Chelsea Market on Tuesday. 

In addition to being crowned the pizza capital of the country, it was recently revealed that New York style pies are the preferred choice amongst fans of the Italian dish.

More than 5,000 Americans were surveyed about their pizza eating habits for the study, which revealed that the average person consumes 288 slices every year.
