Another user wrote: 'It was such a shocking documentary and honestly I'm still not 100% sure what I believe'.

Meanwhile, a fellow viewer commented: 'Too disturbing for me to continue watch it.'

They were referring to Tell Them You Love Me, which tells the tale of a white and married university professor, Anna, who meets Derrick, a black, non-verbal, and disabled younger brother of one of her students, John Johnson.

Anna's meeting with Derrick comes after she had been approached by John about his brother's disability, cerebral palsy.

This resulted in Anna and Derrick, 28, meeting in person for the first time, while the former assisted the latter with his communication.

After teaching him how to use a keyboard fitted with an LED screen to type, Derrick begins taking university classes.

Although Anna subsequently claimed that she was married to someone else, the pair fall in love and begin an allegedly consensual, sexual relationship.

However, as the show progresses, it is revealed through the plot that Anna was convicted of sexually assaulting the man she claimed to have loved, after his mother became aware of their relationship.

Derrick's mother accused Anna of taking advantage of her son, who had been declared by the state to have the mental capacity of a toddler.

A subsequent ruling sees Anna found guilty of two counts of first degree aggravated sexual assault and results in her being sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Two years later, her appeal was granted and conviction revoked on grounds of a technicality.

The show then explores why the testimony related to Anna giving Derrick help via computer-led communication was dismissed, while attempting to determine why she accepted a plea deal for a lesser charge.

Tell Them You Love Me is available to stream on Netflix now
