Joe Biden has faced protests to end his re-election campaign from his own supporters at a fundraiser.
But his wife Jill insisted he was the 'only person for the job' despite the fallout from his calamitous TV debate.
As the President arrived in The Hamptons in New York, he drove past signs from wealthy Democrats reading: 'We love you but it's time.'
Others included: 'Please drop out for US'; 'Step down for democracy'; and 'Thank you, next' – a reference to the hit Ariana Grande song.
Mr Biden, 81 – the oldest US President in history – slurred his words and gave incoherent answers on Thursday night's election debate with Donald Trump.

Biden has faced protests to end his re-election campaign from his own supporters at a fundraiser.
It was seen as such a disaster that Democrats are openly calling for Mr Biden to be replaced as the party's candidate come November.
He tried to quell anxiety among supporters at the fundraiser, hosted by billionaire Barry Rosenstein and attended by actors Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick.
He said: 'It wasn't my best debate ever... I get it. But I'm going to be fighting harder.'
Top Democrats were trying to speak to Mrs Biden in the belief she is the best person to convince her husband to drop out.
But after arriving in The Hamptons on Air Force One, the First Lady stood by the President.
She told donors: 'Joe isn't just the right person for the job – he's the only person for the job.'
Mr Biden was yesterday with his family at Camp David, where they had their picture taken by celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz. But the gathering, which was arranged before the debate, has now taken on new urgency and significance.
Democrats have been carrying out polling to understand the impact of the debate and whether it would impact ballot candidates. An adviser to Mr Biden said that the only way he would quit is if the data showed he couldn't beat Mr Trump.
