I'm a doctor, here's one deadly reason you should never shave your body hair

Removing your body hair is risky business, according to doctors, and could have deadly consequences.

Anesthesiologist Doctor Myro Figura has revealed the terrifying reality facing people who choose to maintain a hair-free aesthetic.

The popular medical expert explained hair - especially on the arms and legs - is the body's first line of defence against many pests and diseases.

In an Instagram reel labelled 'mosquito season' the popular doctor explained body hair serves three main roles - 'insulation, protection and sensation'.

He went in depth about how hair 'protects' against pests, especially mosquitoes, sharing a video of one of the blood sucking insects trying to push through thick leg hair to get to skin.

'Now do you think this mosquito has any chance whatsoever? No,' he said.

The mosquito's needles fail to reach the man's skin, keeping him safe from any viruses it could be carrying.

The doctor's warning comes as Europe suffers through one of its worst mosquito seasons on record - with tourists warned to 'stay away' or 'come prepared'.

Cases of dengue alone doubled in 2023 and are expected to 'explode' in 2024 with one seasoned traveller describing it as 'a terrifying plague'.

According to the European Centre for Disease Patrol and prevention residents of and travellers to 13 countries including Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, and Spain are at serious risk.

The doctors followers were keen to follow his advice.

'It pays to be hairy,' one woman said.

'Looks like it is going to be a hairy summer at my house,' another agreed.

Some took it as permission to stop shaving once and for all.

'So what your saying is don't shave my legs ever especially during summer,' one woman said.

'Can't wait to enter my sasquatch era,' one joked.

Other followers were devastated to hear the doctor's advice.

'I am f***ed. My body is completely hairless,' one woman said.

'Wish I saw this before shaving today,' one man added.

And some were simply skeptical.

'I have pretty hairy legs as a dude and I can confirm, they still find a way to bite you,' one man said.

'They will just bite your toes,' another skeptic said.

'So fun fact- I did a little self-study on this. One year I didn't shave, and I counted all the bug bites and where they are. The next year, I did,' one woman recounted.

'I had six more bug bites the year that I didn't shave, and most of them were on my neck or face. So unless you can grow hair there… this won't work. Still, if you wanna go natural, go for it.'
