Many offices and businesses will shut their doors on Thursday for Independence Day.

The holiday will see families and friends gather for barbecues, picnics and parties.

But if you need to pick up last minute refreshments make sure not to be caught out by major retail closures.

Here DailyMail.com explains what is open and closed for the public holiday.

Major Retailers

Costco, Walmart and Target all confirmed that their stores will open as normal for the holiday

Costco confirmed that all of its stores will shutter for the federal holiday.

However, rival wholesale retailers such as Sam's Club and BJ's Wholesale Club will remain open.

Walmart will be open all through the holiday from 6am to 11pm.

Target, Best Buy, Home Depot, Lowe's, Kroger and Publix as well as most other national chains will remain open.

Others, such as Aldi and Whole Foods, have adjusted hours for the day so it's recommended to check their websites to find when your local branch is open.

Trader Joe's will be open but all stores will close at 5pm local time.

Restaurant chains

Those who would prefer to be catered for on the holiday are in luck as all major restaurant chains are set to be open as normal.

Fast food chains including McDonald's, KFC, Applebee's, Wendy's, Taco Bell, Burger King and Chick-fil-A will operate during their usual opening hours - though these may vary by location.

Starbucks and Dunkin will operate under their normal hours that vary by location.

Sit down restaurants such as Cracker Barrel, Olive Garden, Red Lobster, Buffalo Wild Wings, Waffle House, IHOP and Applebee's will also be open.

Banks

Memorial Day is a banking and stock market holiday meaning major banks will all shut their local branches.

However, their ATMs will operate as normal as will online services.

Wells Fargo, Bank of America, Trust, Citibank, Chase and Capital One will all be shut on Monday.

The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will also not be trading.

Postal Services

The US Postal Service will be shut down for the day meaning there will be no residential or business deliveries. Post offices will also be closed.

UPS will also not pick up or deliver packages on the holiday and some UPS store locations are operating at reduced hours.

However, FedEx services will continue as normal and its offices will remain open, according to the company's website.

FedEx Express and FedEx Ground Economy will operate a 'modified service.'

Priority Mail Express and UPS Express Critical will be available however.

All National Parks will be open for the holiday, the National Park Service has confirmed.

While on some public holidays national parks are free, cost of entry will remain for Independence Day.

Libraries

Public libraries - along with noncritical government services such as city offices and the Department of Motor Vehicles - are also shut down for the holiday.
