A woman was left baffled after a Subway restaurant added a huge tip to her bill for  four items and a drink she poured herself.

In a recent Reddit post, the customer said that a 20 percent automatic tip was added to her bill at a location in Washington State

She ordered a pretzel for her and her husband, two footlong subs for her nieces, and a drink that she had to fill up herself at a soda machine.

The woman immediately got the tip removed, but explained that there is 'tipping pressure' in the state with a minimum wage of $16.28 an hour.

The user, CardiologistSilly926, quickly attracted commenters that were left just as outraged about her pricey fast food experience.

'Tipping is way out of hand nowadays,' one commenter wrote.

The customer detailed what happened that day and exactly how she handled the situation.

'I am the only one who got a drink, which they promptly handed me an empty cup and a straw to fill myself.

'When we checked out they added an automatic 20% tip which equaled $8.51.

'I was indignant and made them remove the tip. I said I do not tip where I have to stand to order my food, get my own drink, and clean up after myself,' she explained.

She added that she did not see an option to change the tip amount before she was almost charged nearly $10 more for her family's meal.

The woman reached out to others online to see what they thought about her experience, asking if they thought she was 'the a**hole' for disputing the charges.

'When things like that happen to me, I cancel the sale altogether. Seems like it's the only way businesses will learn,' a user said.

Another wrote: 'I was asked for a tip when I purchased a gift card.'

'The fact that they added the tip on without your permission is out of line and should be illegal,' another wrote.

Tipping culture in the US has been widely ridiculed as other countries don't commonly tip on services and at restaurants.

A survey by Talker Research found that 2,000 Americans affected by 'tipflation' spent an average of $37.80 a month in tips, or $453.60 annually.

The data showed that 26 respondents felt that because of 'awkwardness' and 'pressure,' they were 'forced' to spend more than they preferred.
