A hip-hop star who publicly exposed himself three times on a flight has blamed being vegan for the moment of madness.

Desiigner, whose real name is Sidney Royel Selby III, was arrested following the incident on a first class Delta flight from Tokyo to Minneapolis in April and sentenced to 120 hours of community service, a $5,000 fine and two years probation.

His management has previously blamed exhaustion from his trip to Japan, as well as marijuana, magic mushrooms and medications for an undisclosed illness from a Thai hospital.

But now, the 27-year-old has said the incident was actually due to 'low sugar' which he claims was brought on by his vegan diet.

Speaking on the No Jumper podcast — which interviews rap artists — the Grammy-nominee said: 'I didn't know what I was doing, I was fully tweaked out of my mind.

'This is when I was vegan, I didn't have enough sugars and stuff like that so, yeah... I was kind of like out of my body.'

The New York native added that he had also consumed shrooms before the flight, saying he wasn't aware how to dose correctly on the substances — which are illegal in the US.

There is little evidence that a vegan diet can cause such anti-social behavior, with doctors saying it was a 'novel excuse' that 'doesn't pass the smell test'.

But physicians suggest that substances such as alcohol and drugs can be much more potent at 42,000 feet because of a drop in oxygen levels.

Airplane cabins have oxygen levels about four percent lower than on the ground, which also triggers a dip in levels in the blood.

This leads blood to rush to the brain to compensate as well as the metabolism to slow, causing substances to have a more potent effect.

Responding to suggestions that the episode was caused by veganism, Dr Stuart Fischer — an emergency medicine physician in New York City — said it was a 'poorly constructed excuse with no scientific basis'.

He told DailyMail.com: 'This is a novel excuse, but it wouldn't work in an elementary school and it certainly doesn't pass the smell test.

'A vegan diet is all carbs, I am not saying it is healthy or unhealthy but those eating it have no disturbances in intonation, expression, speech, walking, and certainly not in lewd behavior.'

Desiigner switched to veganism in 2020 at the height of the Covid pandemic, saying in a February interview it had 'changed my life' and 'put me on a better path'. It is not clear when he quit the diet.

On the 12-hour Delta flight in April last year, Desiigner exposed himself 60 to 90 minutes into the flight.

He covered up, but then exposed himself a second time — prompting flight attendants to ask him to stop, which he did, and inform him that he would be arrested when they landed.

He then exposed his genitals a third time, leading to the singer being taken to the back of the aircraft — where, as he was being moved, vaseline fell out of his trousers.

Upon his arrest in Minneapolis, the New York native told the FBI he 'didn't get much cootie' in Japan and was 'brick hard' after he found himself attracted to a female flight attendant.

He said by exposing himself he had hoped they would be attracted to his 'magic stick'.

After the flight, he checked into a mental health center saying he was 'ashamed' of his actions and had not felt ok for 'the past few months'.

He was sentenced at the US District Court in Minneapolis in September after pleading guilty to a federal misdemeanor of indecent exposure after he was caught exposing himself and masturbating on the flight.

Previous reports had suggested he would be added to the sex offenders register, although his management denies these allegations.

The Timmy Turner singer's attorneys previously said in court documents that he was dealing with 'dehydration, exhaustion from the music tour and travel, the marijuana he ingested, and the medication he received from a Thailand hospital'.

He has not been banned from international flights since and has repeatedly apologized to both the crew and everyone on the flight for his actions.

He said during the podcast: 'I wasn't in the right place. I was just having so much fun and just like not controlling myself at the time.

'I came back home, and I just started bettering myself. It's time to read more, it's time to go on hikes, it's time to work out, it's time to really put myself and build a mental camp for myself to really just put it all together.'

He also says that he is now 100 percent sober.
