A combination of polls by the non-partisan Cook Political Report found that the race was evenly matched until Biden's car crash performance during the June 27 debate.
If the narrowed margins persist until election day, 'then Biden's chances of winning Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan would be about the same chances that a human could survive on Mars for 24 hours,' said David Wasserman, a Cook Political Report analyst told the Wall Street Journal.
The showdown saw Donald Trump edge a 2.5-point lead to 47 percent of support among voters, compared to Biden's 44.45 percent.
Meanwhile, consistent polls by the outlet have highlighted a dramatically slimmed down margin of support for Biden by black Americans compared to during his 2020 victory.

'The lifeblood of the Democratic Party is winning enormous margins among black voters, and voters of color as a whole, in these battleground states,' Wasserman added.

'Despite a series of cataclysmic political events, including Trump's felony convictions and Biden's abysmal debate performance, the race for the White House remains essentially unchanged,' says Lee M. Miringoff, Director of the Marist Institute for Public Opinion.
'But Biden needs to restore confidence among his party faithful that he can win. And Trump needs to tread very lightly during the Republican convention about Project 2025 and avoid positioning the GOP as too extreme.'
