AOC and the Squad under fire for not being 'progressive enough' as they squarely support President Biden's reelection

The progressive left is eating its own.

The Democratic Socialists of America has yanked back its endorsement of Squad leader Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., due to differences on Israel.

The group took particular issue with an event Ocasio-Cortez hosted recently with Jewish leaders that centered on combatting anti-Semitism, which they called a 'deep betrayal.'

'On this panel, anti-Zionism and antisemitism were conflated and boycotting Zionist institutions was condemned,' the DSA statement read.

'This sponsorship is a deep betrayal to all those who've risked their welfare to fight Israeli apartheid and genocide through political and direct action in recent months, and in decades past.'

In order to win their endorsement back, DSA said the congresswoman would need to publicly oppose all funding for Israel's Iron Dome missile defense system and support the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement.

In 2021, Ocasio-Cortez famously cried as she voted 'present' - or no position - on a bill to fund Israel's Iron Dome.

The endorsement rescission is emblematic of a larger break between the progressive grassroots and the lawmakers who put them on the map.

Progressive activists have been left scratching their heads as Squad House members support Biden - even at a time when it is relatively safe to come out against him after the June 27 debate.

Ocasio-Cortez, Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., and Rep. Jamaal Bowman, D-N.Y., have all stood firmly behind Joe Biden remaining at the top of their ticket as now close to 20 House Republicans have urged him to step down.

In February, Omar leveled a damning accusation that Biden is 'greenlighting the massacre of Palestinians.'

But since the debate, she's praised him as the 'best president' in her lifetime and said Democrats need 'to do everything that we can to make sure that we are pushing Biden across the finish line in November.'

'Joe Biden is our nominee. He is not leaving this race. He is in this race and I support him,' Ocasio-Cortez told reporters on Monday.

But progressive activists have long ago tired of old, white male presidents and insist Biden is complicit in a 'genocide' in Gaza.

Reps. Cori Bush, D-Mo., and Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., have made comments supporting the president.

For Bush and Omar, the calculation could be political. Both are facing contentious primaries with more establishment Democrats.

To progressives, Biden could be better than the alternative. Vice President Kamala Harris, for her part, made a career as a tough-on-crime prosecutor.

'The Biden administration has been probably more open than most administrations to engaging with progressives,' Joseph Geevarghese, executive director of key progressive group Our Revolution, told DailyMail.com.

'That, being said our members are pretty clear about they just don't see him inspiring confidence in terms of electability.'

Polling done by Our Revolution, founded by Sen, Bernie Sanders, of some 16,000 of its progressive members found at a third of them were less likely to vote for Biden after the debate.

Still, some suspect that progressive lawmakers are willing to anger their grassroots by backing Biden so they aren't seen as the problem members of the caucus - the ones that establishment Democrats can unite against.

'My suspicion would be the establishment Democratic Party would immediately blame progressives for [Biden's] electoral weaknesses. And I think in this case our progressive elected leaders did not want to be seen as the bloc of the party that was going to stand in the way.'

Bowman has no personal political calculations to make - he already lost his primary and is on his way out in January. Asked if he still supported Biden at the top of the ticket, Bowman told DailyMail.com: 'I already made a couple comments. Yes, yes, yes.'

Asked how he would square that with criticisms of Biden from the progressive base - particularly over Israel - the New York Democrat said: 'I mean, right now we're just in a position where we got to get it figured out and then organize and go win in November. I don't know what that looks like.'

He again made a call for a 'permanent ceasefire,' 'no more weapons' and 'holding Israel accountable.'

Omar did not respond to questions from DailyMail.com.

A smattering of X posts accused AOC of marketing herself as a revolutionary and then becoming 'establishment.'

'Remember when y'all told me AOC was going to change the establishment from the inside? yeah, me too,' read one post on X.

Thee congresswoman 'long ago decided to rebrand herself & pivot to the establishment,' read another.

Ocasio-Cortez, to be clear, has been a sharp critic of Israel in Congress.

She led a push to halt aid to the country and accused Israel of a genocide in Gaza.

But last month when she rallied in the Bronx with Sen. Bernie Sanders and Bowman, a group of pro-Palestine demonstrators showed up and chanted 'You're a fraud, AOC.'

In a separate poll, Our Revolution surveyed 20,000 progressive voters after the debate and found that 67 percent of them want Biden to step aside.

So far 19 congressional Democrats have demanded Biden step aside in public statements - others have expressed similar sentiments behind closed doors.
