The four 'safe' blue states transformed into purple battlegrounds as ailing Biden clings to power and Trump closes in

Four previously 'safe' blue states -  Minnesota, New Mexico, Virginia and New Hampshire - could be transformed into battlegrounds amid Biden's ailing campaign, experts believe.

The president has suffered a number of set backs in the last few weeks since his dismal showdown against Donald Trump in the presidential debate.

Now Democrats warn that the historically blue states could be flipped in November.

Biden comfortably won all four states in 2020, but recent modelling suggests support may be dwindling.

One poll indicates an almost dead heat in Virginia, the New York Times reports. The state has not voted Republican since 2004.

Another shows Trump edging ahead in New Hampshire, which has been a Dem stronghold since 2000.

Meanwhile the non-partisan Cook Political Report downgraded Minnesota and New Hampshire from 'likely' Biden wins to just leaning towards him.

New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan reportedly told sources that she fears for her seat.

Her state has a high proportion of Hispanic men, a demographic that Biden is struggling to win over.

Democrat Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota stated there is 'a lot of work to be done' to secure another win. His state historically has opted for third party candidates.

Even in Democrat strongholds such as New York and Oregon there are fears that Biden's majority is slipping, sources told the NYT.

Surveys found that Biden was up by just a single digit amount compared to Trump.

Trump's team said it hopes to capitalize on the turmoil, with a June memo stating the Republican party hopes to open 11 campaign offices in Virginia and Minnesota.

'President Trump is appealing to voters across the political spectrum, including in so-called blue states like Virginia, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Mexico and New Jersey, with his agenda to lower costs, secure the border, and restore peace through strength,' said Anna Kelly, a spokeswoman for the R.N.C. told the NYT.

The campaign has been given a cash boost by Elon Musk, who recently came out in support of Trump with a donation for an undisclosed amount.

Trump has also previously bragged about challenging in true blue states like New Jersey. But this has been dismissed as 'bluster' by Biden's team.

'This election will be decided by a subset of voters in a narrow set of battlegrounds, but only the Biden-Harris campaign is investing to reach and persuade those voters, with more than 200 offices and 1,200 staffers,' Dan Kanninen, the Biden campaign's battleground state director, said in a statement.

'We have multiple pathways to victory and won't take any voter for granted in our campaign to win.'

It comes amid projections that Biden could also lose three key swing states amid the backlash to his repeated blunders.

One expert stated the president has the 'same chances of surviving on Mars' as he does winning the three key swing states of Georgia, Pennsylvania and Michigan.

A bipartisan poll in the swing state of Wisconsin placed Trump up five percentage points on Biden following the June 27 debate.

Biden trailed by a similar margin once third party candidates were considered.

However, he has remained resolute in his intention to keep running despite calls from 20 Democrats asking him to withdraw.

Several polls have suggested that Biden's chances have not been too badly harmed by his recent flubs, which this week included referring to Ukraine's President Zelesnky as Putin.

Surveys by NPR and Marist College place both Biden and Trump on an almost equally footing.
