The incredible moment Secret Service sharpshooters took down Donald Trump's would-be assassin was captured on video by terrified supporters in the crowd.

As Trump spoke two agents could be seen positioned on top of a building above the rally stage in Butler, Pennsylvania.

At almost the exact split second Trump grabs his ear, after being hit by a bullet, one of the agent's powerful guns is seen recoiling.

The agent took out the gunman who was on a rooftop hundreds of yards away, hitting him in the head.

Trump was then rushed off stage by other agents, but not before pumping his fist and shouting 'fight, fight, fight' to the crowd.

The failed assassin was shot and killed, but not before killing at least one member of the rally crowd in the terrifying scene at 6.15pm on Saturday.

Two others were critically injured.

Trump was taken to hospital for observation, but a short time later released a heroic statement describing the moment he felt the 'bullet ripping through his skin'.

'I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening,' the former president wrote on his Truth Social account.

Witnesses described seeing the man armed with a rifle climbing onto the roof of a building 130 yards away and law enforcement recovered an AR-style rifle from there.

The suspect fired at least eight shots from outside the security perimeter in an incident that sparked immediate calls for an an investigation into the security failure.

A witness to the assassination revealed he warned Secret Service agents about a man with a rifle on a nearby roof minutes before they opened fire.

The witness, named only as Greg, told the BBC that he saw the suspected gunman climb into a rooftop outside the event, and was bewildered by the lack of action from agents.

'I’m thinking to myself 'Why is Trump still speaking, why have they not pulled him off the stage,'' he said. 'The next thing you know, five shots ring out.'

He added that he saw the Secret Service 'blow his head off.'

After Trump was shot, he reassured the crowd he was gone and then released a statement from hospital detailing what happened to him.

He put out a statement on Truth Social confirming he was struck by a bullet, while thanking the Secret Service and law enforcement for their 'rapid response on the shooting that just took place in Butler, Pennsylvania.'

'Most importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the Rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person that was badly injured.'

'It is incredible that such an act can take place in our Country. Nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now dead. I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA!'

The assassination attempt occurred just days before the Republican National Convention kicks off in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Trump is expected to address his delegates assembled who will formally nominate him to become the GOP nominee for the presidency.

His campaign said he will still attend the convention, which will go on as planned.

'As was communicated earlier this evening, President Trump is doing well and grateful to law enforcement and first responders for their fast action.'

'President Trump looks forward to joining you all in Milwaukee as we proceed with our convention to nominate him to serve as the 47th President of the United States. As our party's nominee, President Trump will continue to share his vision to Make America Great Again.'
