Bill Maher has claims that the man who tried to assassinate former president Donald Trump caused 'so much damage to the left' just two hours after the shooting took place.

Trump, 78, nearly lost his life on Saturday, after 20-year-old would-be assassin Thomas Matthew Crooks fired at him with an 'AR-style' weapon as he spoke at a campaign rally near Butler, Pennsylvania, at around 6pm.

As news of the attempted killing flew around the world within minutes the killer's identity and motive was not yet public by Saturday evening.

Despite this, just two hours after the shooting took place, Bill Maher, 68, told audience members at a show at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis, Minnesota, that the shooter 'has done so much damage to the left.'

'[You've] lost a lot of moral high ground in the 'You're the violent people, liberals don't shoot people, liberals don't solve it that way',' he added.

Maher, who has long been a critic of the former president, said that the shooting, and the accompanying image of Trump raising his fist while covered in blood, has all but cemented a Republican win in November.

'I gotta say this. He's the luckiest motherf***er that has ever walked the face of the Earth.

'When I saw that photo today of him with the blood streaming down his face—I don't want to say the election's over because anything can happen in an election. But Jesus Christ.

'MAGA nation finally has its full martyr. They loved it when he went to jail. The mug shot. I gotta say, he's insane and he's a criminal.

'But that mug shot? F***ing nailed it. Perfect And listen, he played the [assassination] scene like he rehearsed it! Take 1! Take 1!

'I can see the memes now. "The man the lib****s couldn't kill." Biden can't get through a debate and a bullet can't stop Donald Trump. It almost doesn't matter who the Democrats put up now.'

Maher has long criticised Trump's views and policies. In 2019, he boldly proclaimed that he would rather the US went into an economic recession than Trump be re-elected in 2020.

He said on his HBO show: 'We have survived many recessions, we can't survive another Donald Trump term.'

Trump appeared to have caught the clip, and angrily said the 'wacko comedian' told 'so many lies.'

Maher also repeatedly said that Trump would not concede if he lost the 2020 election since at 2018, and criticised Democrats for not taking the threat seriously.

Just a day before Trump's shooting, Maher predicted the exact date that he believes Joe Biden will step aside in the presidential race as he issued an optimistic look at who could replace him.

He rattled through possible replacements including Gavin Newsom, Kamala Harris and Gretchen Whitmer, as he insisted that 'Biden is toast.'

He joked that 'when' the 81-year-old bows out, he will pick August 9 as the date - the same day that Richard Nixon became the only president to resign in 1974.

Maher scathed Biden for holding Democrats back ahead of the election as he listed a number of alternates who he felt could win in November, mainly because they 'are moderates, are under 100-years-old, and have a D next to their name.'

A member of the crowd was killed in the deadly shooting, while two others who were wounded are in critical condition. All three are males, according to law enforcement officials.

Trump was left bloodied and hurt during the assassination attempt as he was seen to suddenly grab hold of his ear as loud bangs rang out and whizzed by before he ducked to the floor.

He then got to his feet with blood pouring down his cheek and raised his fist in the air and defiantly shouted 'fight' while the audience shouted 'USA' as he was dragged off stage and bundled into a vehicle.

Secret Service agents could be heard shouting 'the shooter is down' in the ensuing chaos and the gunman was later confirmed dead.

Trump was taken to hospital for treatment before being later released.

Spokesman Steven Cheung said Trump is 'fine' and being checked out at a local medical facility while the former president's eldest son Donald Trump Jr said his father 'is in great spirits'.

Trump flew back to New Jersey ahead of his spending the night at his golf resort in Bedminster.

In a post to his Truth Social network, Trump thanked the Secret Service and other law enforcement 'for their rapid response'.

'I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin,' he said on social media.

'Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening.

'I want to thank The United States Secret Service, and all of law enforcement, for their rapid response,' Trump added.

'Most importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person that was badly injured.

'It is incredible that such an act can take place in our country.

'GOD BLESS AMERICA!'
