From humble beginnings, Kat Torres would overcome extreme poverty to lead a coveted life of luxury, brushing shoulders with A-list celebrities and foreign oligarchs - and 'coaching' some 14,000 clients in how to achieve greatness.
But behind the scenes, the Brazilian 'wellness' influencer and model had schemed a far more sinister plan to ensnare her followers in a cultish web of human trafficking and slavery, a judge concluded as she was sentenced to years in prison last month.
Katiuscia Torres was deported back to Brazil and arrested in November 2022 as allegations emerged about her life behind closed doors in the United States. After more than 18 months in jail, she was finally sentenced to eight years in prison for subjecting one follower to human trafficking and slavery, a judge assessing the victim had been lured abroad for sexual exploitation.
Ms Torres, a self-proclaimed witch reportedly inspired by spiritual leaders and business coaches, is accused of enticing impressionable victims to her home to work for her unpaid. One victim said they were used as a domestic 'slave', 'terrified' of the woman proclaiming to help her. Another claimed she was threatened with curses, told to work in a strip club for money withheld by Ms Torres.
In a new BBC documentary, the guru maintained her innocence from prison in Rio de Janeiro. But with more than 20 women now claiming to have been scammed or exploited, horrifying revelations continue to emerge around the bizarre life of the Instagram influencer once an inspiration to millions.

At her height, Katiuscia Torres Soares commanded a following of 1.2million subscribers on Instagram, sharing wholesome, inspirational posts and life advice on relationships, business and wellness.
Hailing from Belem in northern Brazil, Ms Torres' story was itself inspirational. As a child from an impoverished background, she showed early ambition as a model going on to pose in beauty pageants before moving to Europe to further her career.
During her rise, Ms Torres moved to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career, and documented her journey and influencer lifestyle online, amassing a loyal following.
It was after taking the powerful psychedelic drug ayahuasca that Ms Torres 'reinvented herself' as a life coach and hypnotist, according to Vice. In 2017 she published a self-help book called 'A Voice', and appeared on Brazilian television claiming she had always been guided by a 'voice from above', a spiritual connection that guided her work.
Online, the influencer painted herself as an accomplished actor, model, author and coach - and watched her following swell from 1,000 to as many as 14,000, she claims.
Many were Brazilian women hoping to learn from her, and paying huge sums for her advice. Early on, online consultations 'started at $150', according to the BBC. But she would soon be able to charge much more for her services. The 'most purchased' annual 'plan', according to her website, was valued at R$700 - about £100.
Ms Torres built an extensive web of connections throughout her rise. In 2013, aged 24 and working as a model in Paris, she implied she was dating Leonardo DiCaprio while staying at a house in Cannes.
The pair were photographed together, surrounded by security, at the event. At first, she shied away from directly confirming any details about their relationship, claiming they had a pact not to publicly say anything.
A source close to DiCaprio told MailOnline at the time that he was not dating Torres and her story is 'completely false'. She later backtracked away from the comments.
Sources told the BBC Ms Torres also knew oligarchs, and senior figures in finance and government.
But behind the scenes, horrifying accounts of human trafficking and slavery were beginning to compile. Colborn Bell, her ex-husband, told the BBC Ms Torres was a 'by definition a master manipulator'. Luzer Twersky, her former roommate, said she became an 'absolute narcissistic monster' as her following grew.
One former client told the broadcaster that she was recruited to join Ms Torres in New York to perform household chores as a live-in assistant.
Ana, who had left an abusive relationship before joining Ms Torres, described three months of tyranny, claiming she was unpaid and was only able to sleep when the influencer went out - on a sofa covered in cat urine.
Ana left after three months, but Ms Torres kept contact for 12. The alleged victim said: 'I felt like I'm stuck here. I didn't have a way out... now I see that she was using me as a slave.'
She said she believed it was her plan to 'isolate everybody' - and said she became 'terrified' of the woman professing to help her.
Ms Torres denies that Ana worked in the house.

Desirrê Freitas (L) and Letícia Maia Alvarenga (R) brought allegations as Ms Torres for their treatment while living with her in Austin, Texas
Similar patterns emerged in Austin, Texas, after Ms Torres moved in 2022. Desirrê Freitas, another former client, said she received messages from Ms Torres claiming she was suicidal and needed her help.
She said she bought her tickets to travel across the United States to join her in Texas - but when she arrived she said Ms Torres threatened her with curses and involved her in work in a strip club.
Desirrê was not allowed to work in the United States at the time, and she claims Ms Torres told her she would revoke her help and expenses incurred if she left.
She said she believed the job would be temporary. She earned thousands of dollars working in the club - but claims it was withheld by Ms Torres, who only set her higher and higher earning targets.
When she missed the spiralling targets, she said, she 'ended up sleeping on the street'.
Women staying with Ms Torres at their rented five-bedroom mansion in Austin said they were forbidden from speaking with each other and could not leave their rooms without permission.
Neighbour Wayne Murray told the BBC that Ms Torres and her partner kept to themselves while living in Austin, that they 'weren't very friendly'.
After their eviction, allegedly for not paying rent, he claimed to have found voodoo dolls among their left belongings, and said there was a room for witchcraft set up in the house.
While Ms Torres was still living in Austin, videos would emerge of those with her performing what seemed to be ritualistic exercises, the young women appearing 'drugged and speaking disconnected phrases', according to O Globo.
Photos of Desirrê and Letícia Maia Alvarenga, another woman convinced to join Ms Torres in the US, also reportedly appeared on escort websites, their hair dyed dark blonde like Torres'.
The scheme finally began to unravel when the parents of Desirrê and Leticia declared their children missing, sparking huge searches on social media to track them down.
Letícia claimed she had run away from abuse from her father - before retracting the allegation and telling police there had never been any abuse, and that Ms Torres had forced her to record the claims, O Globo reported.
As suspicion grew around the murky arrangement in Austin, Brazilian top model Yasmín Brunet came close to pointing a finger at Ms Torres after reading about the 'despair of the families' - before receiving a slew of attacks from those living with Ms Torres, Letícia falsely accusing her of running a sex worker racket.
Desirrê would later apologise for making false accusations against Brunet, claiming they had also been made under duress.
It was ultimately Brunet who took the allegations to the police. The Federal Court of São Paulo issued a preventative arrest warrant against Ms Torres 'for the crime of subjecting people to conditions analagous to slavery'.

Letícia and Desirrê were both also deported after being detained in the US with irregular documentation.
On June 28 of this year, a judge finally sentenced Ms Torres to eight years in prison for subjecting Desirrê to human trafficking and slavery.
Her lawyer told the BBC that Ms Torres had appealed the conviction and maintains her innocence.
As the BBC secured a rare court order to interview Ms Torres in prison in April for the first time since she was jailed, horrifying details and allegations about the influencer's rise and fall continue to emerge from the testimonies of alleged victims.
