North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum said Donald Trump hinted he could clinch a cabinet position during their call on Monday.

Former President Trump called Burgum and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) to inform them that he did not select them to be his running mate in the 2024 race – instead he chose Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio).

Burgum said Trump called him 'Mr. Secretary' on the call, but didn't say whether he would accept a position in the administration.

'I got a call and great conversation with the president and he said, 'Hey Mr. Secretary.' He's always been so positive and so considerate to [my wife] Kathryn and I this whole time,' Burgum told CNN during an interview at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee on Monday.

'But as you know, Kaitlan, we were never running for a cabinet position, never running for VP,' he added.

Burgum, Rubio and Vance were the final three in consideration for the spot as Trump's running mate in November.

Trump announced on Monday afternoon that he selected Vance after he made calls to Burgum and Rubio to tell them they were out. The delegates gathered for the Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on Monday then voted to officially nominate Vance as the Republican vice presidential candidate.

Burgum was previously running in the Republican presidential primary against Trump – and a dozen other candidates. He dropped out in December 2023 when he failed to qualify for the third primary debate.

After ending his own presidential bid, the North Dakota governor and billionaire joined Trump's campaign as an adviser on energy policy.

In response to Trump picking Vance as his running mate, Burgum wrote on X: 'Donald Trump is the strongest leader to enter the political arena in modern American history! Today he selected

J.D. Vance as his running mate, whose small town roots and service to country make him a powerful voice for the America First Agenda.'

'I look forward to campaigning for the Trump-Vance ticket to Make America Great Again!' the governor concluded.
