Donald Trump, Jr. has revealed the 'tough moment' when he didn't know his father's health status after a would-be assassin fired on him, and the light-hearted jokes they exchanged to break the tension.
The president's eldest son reenacted part of their first conversation after the gunman fired on the former president in Pennsylvania, in a check-in that finally ended the uncertainty and included some father-son-banter.
'Can I call you Evander Holyfield because of the missing chunk of ear?' he said he told his father, who has hosted boxing matches.
Don Jr. even put on a respectable Trump impression to describe the way they cut the tension through humor, speaking in an Axios interview outside the Republican convention.
'Most importantly. How’s the hair?' he said asked his father. 'The hair is fine, Don. The hair is fine. A lot of blood in it, but it’s fine,' he says his dad responded.
Those jokes bely the horror that Trump, Jr. and family members went through – and serious security questions he is demanding U.S. agencies answer about what went wrong.

He said he was fishing with his daughter in Jupiter, Florida when he first learned the news.
'It was 90 mins before I even knew he was alive. That was a tough moment,' he said.
'I’ll never forget it. That was a heavy couple hours,' he shared.
'I don't want to be the guy – I won't push you know, conspiracies. But these are just facts that I can't reconcile in any way, shape or form,' he said, demanding to know how a gunman was able to remain on a roof to shoot at his father at Pennsylvania rally.

He said he didn't want to 'push conspiracies' but asked how a gunman could have possibly gotten within 150 yards of the president and got off multiple shots
He floated the idea that Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. could get a job in a second Trump administration, after a leaked video showed Trump talking up vaccine skepticism in a call to him
Trump, Jr. had pushed for his father to select Sen. J.D. Vance as his running mate
‘Having had a Secret Service detail myself, having seen what they do … a guy does not get on a rooftop with a rifle where there’s people .. for five minutes saying: Here’s a guy on a rooftop with a gun,’ he told interviewer Mike Allen.
He was accompanied by a his own security protection at an event where guests had their bags swept.
He indicated he was flummoxed about how the breach occured.
‘It doesn’t happen,’ he said. ‘That doesn’t happen without a serious breach of something. It’s an impossibility,’ said Trump, Jr., an avid hunter who compared a shot inside 150 yards to a gimme golf shot.
‘That’s like a 6-inch putt for a shooter. It does not happen. It does not happen,’ he said.
He says he found out about his father's selection of J.D. Vance as his running mate when everyone else did, despite being a top backer for the choice.
'I felt it for a while. I knew for sure basically when I saw the Truth go out. I found out like usually like the rest of the world did – on social media,' he revealed.
'It probably went down longer than it should have in my opinion,' he said of the process.
He also spoke about a potential Robert Kennedy, Jr. endorsement, on a day a leaked video showed the former president trying to butter him up by sharing vaccine skepticism.
'Maybe that’s one of those moments that brings people together,' he said, pointing to Kennedy family history. 'Maybe there’s a place for him somewhere in an administration,' he said.
