A recall of cucumbers sold at Walmart stores across three states has been issued over listeria outbreak concerns.

Wiers Farm Inc, an Ohio based distributor has voluntarily recalled cucumbers shipped to select stores in Michigan, Indiana and Ohio.

The company made the recall out of 'out of an abundance of caution' after listeria monocytogenes was detected during 'routine sampling,' the Food and Drug Administration said in the recall notice

The bacteria can cause listeriosis, which can be fatal to the elderly, young children and the immunocompromised.

There are two affected products - whole cucumbers with the packing date June 5 printed on the packaging, and bagged salad cucumber labelled with the dates June 5 and June 6.

'This product was not grown or harvested by Wiers Farm. It was sourced from out of state, then handled and distributed by Wiers Farm,' the FDA notice said.

'Wiers Farm is coordinating closely with regulatory officials in connection with the recall.

'The potential contamination was discovered by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) through routine sampling.'

The product is already past its shelf life and should therefore be out of distribution the FDA explained.

However, anyone who still has the products should not eat them but throw them away.

No illness is yet to have been reported in association with the recall.
