Six members of two families were massacred at a construction site in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato.

The victims, three related male construction workers and a couple and their grandson, were shot dead in the municipality of Yuriria on Tuesday.

Yuriria Mayor María De Los Ángeles told Mexican news outlet Milenio that the construction workers were working at the site owned by the family of the couple when several gunmen arrived and opened fire.

'Unfortunately, this cowardly event is taking place here in this municipality,' De Los Ángeles said. 'It shocks the entire municipality, especially with a minor and a woman among those six people who were executed.'

Because the shooting took place in an area outside the city center, the mayor said nobody witnessed the shooting.

Authorities were dispatched to the murder scene around 6 pm local time after a local discovered the bodies near a car.

The Guanajuato State Attorney General's Office said it is investigating the killings but have not yet detained any suspects.

While Guanajuato ranks as Mexico's most dangerous state, with 1,469 murders during the first six months of 2024, Mayor De Los Ángeles said Yuriria had been spared up until the most recent massacre.

'Yuriria has been calm. Yuriria is a quiet municipality,' she said. 'Unfortunately, yes, like the entire country, the state is experiencing situations of insecurity. But (in Yuriria) they are very sporadically.'

Last Friday, armed men barged inside a children's party and executed four people, including a 10-year-old girl, in the city of Pénjamo.

On Tuesday, gunmen shot and killed a mother walking with her two children, aged 4 and 5. The children were wounded in the attack and survived.

Authorities have not said if the three killings were linked to cartel violence in a state where the Jalisco New Generation Cartel is at warring with local gangs for domination of the industrial and farming hub.

Mexican security analyst David Saucedo said that towns in the south of Guanajuato, bordering the state of Michoacan, have constant cartel activity.

'The attack on complete families is with the goal of dispersing rival cartel structures,' he said. 'The idea is that they not only retaliate against their rivals but also against their families.'
