California Gov. Gavin Newsom has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the Democratic presidential nomination following Biden's bowing out of the race.

The surprise endorsement comes just hours after Joe Biden made the shocking announcement that he would no longer seek reelection.

Biden endorsed Harris shortly after dropping out and since then questions have swirled over who will be named the Democratic nominee.

'Tough. Fearless. Tenacious. With our democracy at stake and our future on the line, no one is better to prosecute the case against Donald Trump's dark vision and guide our country in a healthier direction than America’s Vice President,' Newsom posted on X Sunday evening hours after Biden dropped out.

Fueling conversations that Newsom could be a potential presidential candidate after Biden's tenure ended, the California Gov. has spent time as a Biden surrogate traveling the country.

He also squared off in a debate against rival Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Fox News, introducing him to conservatives across the country who may not have previously been fully familiar with the slicked-back look of Newsom.

The governor has been a close ally of Biden even amidst his debate debacle.

He also confirmed earlier this month that he would not challenge Harris for the presidency in 20204 - a commitment he made long ago - saying recently 'of course' he would not run against her.

Newsom said Harris is tough fearless and tenacious in his endorsement.

The same night as the disastrous debate, Newsom denied to DailyMail.com that he would pick up the Democratic nomination should Biden cancel his run.

He dismissed claims he could replace Joe Biden on the presidential ticket as 'farcical'.

He said it was 'really distressing' to have to respond to questions about whether he could be a substitute for the 81-year-old.

The Californian Governor made the comments to DailyMail.com as he strolled the red carpet at CNN's spin room ahead of the presidential debate in Atlanta between Biden and  Donald Trump.

Moments later, Biden stumbled through what even Democrats described as a 'painful' 90 minutes, repeatedly losing his train of thought and trailing off.

But Newsom, who many believe will mount a future presidential bid, touted Biden's accomplishments as he slammed Trump.

When pressed by DailyMail.com specifically on whether he would be willing to step in for Biden should the president bow out before this year's election, Newsom shot it down.

'It's a non sequitur. I don't even understand the context of that,' he responded.
