Two iconic Los Angeles movie theaters are set to close later this week.

The Regency Village Theater in Westwood and its nearby sister theatre, the Bruin, will close on Thursday, their operator confirmed on Sunday.

Regency Theaters, which manages 20 locations in California, has run the two cinemas - on either side of Broxton Avenue - for the last 14 years but its leases for the properties end later this month.

The two theaters, opened in the 1930s, have become film industry landmarks and recently featured in Quentin Tarantino's 'Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood.'

The Regency Village, named a historic cultural monument in 1988, will only close temporarily after a herculean effort to save it spearheaded by director Jason Reitman, the man behind the recent Ghostbusters movies.

Reitman and a group of movie industry celebrities, including Christopher Nolan, JJ Abrams, Guillermo del Toro, Steven Spielberg and Bradley Cooper, bought the theater in February.

The group previously stated their plans to renovate and reopen the building to screen a mixture of new and old films, but have not given a timeline for completing the project.

'We have an exciting vision that includes dining, drinking, moviegoing, gallery viewing and programming of new and old films, and we cannot wait to share that with everybody,' Reitman told the LA Times

The Regency Village's 170-foot white Spanish Revival-Art Deco exterior was designed by Percy P. Lewis.

Opened in 1931, it was originally part of the Fox Theaters group before being taken over by the Mann Theaters chain in the 1970s.

The Bruin, which opened its doors for the first time in 1937, is set to close for the foreseeable future.

'The [Bruin's] owners thank the Golin Family and Regency Theaters for our relationship with them for the last 14 years,' a representative said in a statement to the Times.

The owners added that they are 'currently evaluating future opportunities for the Bruin.'

Movie theaters have struggled to recover after the effects of pandemic lockdowns, the rise of streaming and the latest blow of the SAG-AFRA writer and actors strikes last year.

The pipeline of new films was slowed down significantly as a result which has made it more difficult for movie theaters to bounce back.

However, blockbuster films such as Twisters which debuted to roaring success last weekend, offer a glimmer of hope to struggling theater across the country.
