For Democrats who had been fearing a wipeout this fall with Trump coasting to victory as President Biden struggled, the shake-up on the ticket and party quickly rallying behind Vice President Kamala Harris is a welcomed change.

Democrats at Harris’ first campaign event as presumptive presidential nominee in Wisconsin on Tuesday breathed a sigh of relief and said they're confident the vice president has what it takes to beat Donald Trump in November.

Several voters told DailyMail.com that despite their deep respect for Biden, they were finally feeling enthusiastic and hopeful this campaign season with Harris at the top of the ticket.

‘Honestly this is so exciting. I’m honored to be here,’ gushed Maria Olig from Milwaukee who showed up for Harris' rally. ‘We need change. Kamala’s going to bring it.’

She said she came to the event after finally being able to ‘wake up in the morning and be optimistic.’

The vice president traveled to Milwaukee just hours after locking in the necessary Democrats delegates to secure the nomination at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday, less than 48 hours after President Biden had dropped out.

‘Since this announcement has been made, I’m filled with so much hope,’ said Rosanda Arndt from Waukesha, WI. The Harris rally was the first political event she has ever attended.

‘I have slept now for the last few nights without disturbance,’ she said.

‘It’s such a historic event, and I really didn’t want to miss it,’ said Courtney Ryan from Madison, WI. She said she cannot wait to see Harris carry the torch ‘across the finish line.’

If elected, Harris would be the first woman and first woman of color elected president.

She is already the first woman of color to become the presumptive presidential nominee of a major political party, and the significance was not lost on voters in attendance.

For some, seeing Harris' first campaign in Milwaukee was a family affair with parents bringing young daughters to see who they believe could be the first black and asian woman president.

Multiple voters and speakers at the rally celebrated the possibility of Harris shattering the highest glass ceiling as the first female president of the United States.

Voters also were confident in Harris’ ability to beat Trump despite her trailing him in the polls with just over 100 days to go.

“I think she’s going to handily beat him because she’s young and she’s smart,’ said Mitch Hancock from Milwaukee said.

Harris took the fight to Trump during her rally accusing the ex-president of being a fraud, a cheat and a predator. She touted her time as a prosecutor and slammed him as a convicted felon.

It was a take down that Democrats have long been craving from their presidential candidate.

Karen Siegel said she was 'absolutely confident' Harris could win against Trump and said she could not wait to see Harris 'prosecute' Trump on the campaign trail.

A new Reuters/Ipsos poll out on Tuesday showed Harris leading Trump 44 percent to 42 percent.

It was conducted after the Republican National Convention last week in Milwaukee and Biden exiting the race on Sunday.

Republicans have been trying out their own line of attacks on Harris now that she has taken over the top of the Democratic ticket. They've criticized her for her role in addressing the border in the Biden administration.

Another line has been accusing her of covering up Biden's ailing health. Some GOP lawmakers have called on Biden to  resign following his exit from the race, claiming he is not fit to serve the rest of his term.

Democratic voters rejected the criticism. They praised Biden's decision to exit the race but dismissed him leaving before the end of his term.

'He should finish his term,' said Dia Amerson from Milwaukee forcefully. She said she was with Biden all the way until he left the race. She believes he should not only finish his term, but help Harris with the campaign.

‘If a person who got impeached twice didn’t resign, I don’t think Biden should resign,' said Neil Fulton referencing Trump with a laugh.
