A FedEx driver in North Carolina has been arrested for stealing a $5,500 French Bulldog during his delivery route and leaving it to perish in his sweltering truck.

Kimani Joehon Marshall, 44, from Fayetteville, allegedly stole the dog named Tori on July 3 while delivering a package in the area of US 421 South.

The beloved pet was left in Marshall's FedEx truck as he continued his deliveries, ABC13 reported.

Tori tragically died due to reported heat-related issues as temperatures that day soared into the 90s.

A week after her disappearance, Tori's remains were discovered on the side of the road on July 10.

The Harnett County Sheriff's Office began investigating the case after receiving a report of the stolen dog on July 7.

Marshall surrendered himself to deputies on Monday, weeks after the incident occurred.

He now faces multiple charges including larceny of a dog, possession of stolen property, and cruelty to animals.

The accused is currently being held in the Harnett County Detention Center on a $50,000 secured bond.

In April, a study found that the emotional turmoil of having a pet stolen is similar to losing a child.

Researchers interviewed owners whose dog had been stolen, and asked them to describe their experiences and needs.

Most participants likened the emotional turmoil caused by the event to that experienced when losing a child or other family member.

This included feelings of sadness, sorrow, despair, hopelessness and numbness coupled with anxiety.
