A driver of an $80,000 electric vehicle hit a dog on a Boston street and then fled the scene, police say.

The unidentified driver is being hunted by cops after they were allegedly involved in the hit-and-run on Thursday around 5:30pm.

The vehicle was driving down Warren Street in Watertown, Massachusetts, when the dog was hit before they quickly fled the scene.

Police are looking for a black Lucid car with 'distinct markings such as headlights that span the front of the vehicle, chrome side mirrors and chrome outlining the top portion of the side windows and rear windshield,' according to a Facebook post.

Police did not give an update on the dog's condition and it is unclear if the animal lived in the neighborhood.

Last month, Brandon Garrett, 61, of Halfway, Oregon, was rescued from a near-death experience after one of his four dogs quickly took action to save him.

Garrett and his four dogs were on his way to a campsite when his car crashed near US Forest Service Road 39 and ended up stuck at the bottom of an 85-foot-ravine on June 2.

As Garrett fought for his life, his dog Blue managed to come out of the wreckage and ended up running four miles to reach the campsite where Garrett's family was waiting for him.

In the meantime, the pup owner was able to pull himself a hundred yards away from the crash and had to spend the night at the site before help could arrive.

After he was rescued, he was taken to a hospital for treatment.

According to the Sheriff's Office, after Garrett 'failed to negotiate a curve causing the vehicle to plummet off the embankment.'

The three remaining dogs were located alive at the crash scene by officials.

Onlookers have been praising Blue's actions - calling him a 'best friend for life' and a 'great & caring dog'.

'What an amazing story. What a great & caring dog. He knew what he needed to do and he did it,' one viewer wrote.

Blue Buffalo, a pet supplies company also wrote: 'That's a best friend FOR LIFE! Now if we could only get Blue some well-deserved treats...'
