Six workers were killed and three were injured after a boiler tank exploded at a José Cuervo tequila factory in Mexico on Tuesday.

The Jalisco Civil Defense said in a statement that the explosion spread to an area of the distillery, causing each of the three containers to spill 219,000 liters of tequila.

Surveillance video showed the tank being propelled into the air followed by a huge fireball on Tuesday around 4:30 pm in the municipality of Tequila.

The force of the blast sent the boiler crashing into an empty lot several yards away from the La Rojeña Factory.

None of the tourists and locals who were near the factory were injured by the explosion.

'Casa Cuervo reiterates that the safety and integrity of its collaborators, neighbors and visitors are our priority, which is why the strict security protocols will be reinforced in each of our facilities,' the tequila maker said in a statement.

Tequila Mayor Alfonso Magalllanes told Radio Metropoli on Wednesday the workers were welding the boiler tank when it exploded.

He added that several tequila distillery companies have temporarily suspended service.

The body of the sixth victim was located in a pit while firefighters were inspecting the site and removing debris.

A second blast was reported Wednesday morning, but not injuries were reported.

Firefighters were able to put out the flames before it could reach a second container holding 200,000 liters of tequila.

'It is important to emphasize that local authorities continue to monitor the situation and work together to guarantee the safety of the community and prevent future incidents,' the Jalisco Civil Defense said in a statement.
