An Australian father has paid $600,000 more for a one-storey red brick home sitting on 6.7 acres of land in a bid to stop his children spending all day on their iPads.

The four-bedroom property in Mickleham, 40km north of Melbourne, had a price guide of $1.7million-$1.87million but sold on July 20 for an eye-watering $2.47million.

Ray White sales consultant Adrian Prestileo told FEMAIL the determined buyer knew he would win the auction that day.

'Mate, I'm buying this home,' were the five words Mr Prestileo was told by the dad before the auction started.

'The buyer made it clear he wanted the property to have more space for his kids to play outdoors so they're not spending all day using technology,' Mr Prestileo said.

'He had two or three young children but came to the auction alone. He had been looking for a while and I recommended going hard at this auction because there was no plan B.'

Mr Prestileo described the property as 'niche' because it has acreage. This style of home is not as desirable for a standard buyer in the market right now.

In his experience, Mr Prestileo said he had never seen a home sell for so much more than the price guide.

There were three registered bidders on the day and the auction was 'aggressive' as the price was rapidly increasing by $50,000-$100,000 increments.

Mr Prestileo assumed the man was in his late 30s or early 40s.

The 'ranch-style' home was built in 2000 and features an open-plan living and dining space attached to the kitchen.

There's a separate rumpus lounge room, master ensuite in the first bedroom and main family bathroom.

Outdoors there are multiple fenced paddocks, lots of space for the kids to play, an enormous shed, stables, studio, large water tank and solar panels.

There's also a great opportunity for the dad to renovate the home and update the interiors and overall style.

The suburb is perfect for those seeking tranquility of a relaxed, slower rural lifestyle compared to the hustle and bustle of Melbourne.
