A covert new fee is being added to Californians fast food orders after a local law has allowed restaurants to tack it onto bills.

McDonald's, Chick-Fil-A and other fast food chains are now charging customers for the bags their food and drinks come in at some LA locations.

'I'm going to drive-thru, and I see the sign: There's a mandatory charge of 10 cents per bag,' Dr. KT Shakur told NBC LA after visiting his local McDonald's in the area.

The LA City Attorney's Office told NBC an ordinance from 2013 allows for the charging of bags at supermarkets, but that an amendment to include restaurants took effect in July 2023.

'The requirement is that all facilities subject to the ordinance provide reusable bags to customers, either for sale or at no charge, for the purpose of carrying away goods or other materials from the point of sale,' the office said in a statement.

'If recyclable paper bags are provided, the customer is to be charged $0.10 for each bag.

'This ordinance expanded the applicability of the 2013 single use plastic bag ordinance beyond just grocery stores' it read.

'If I didn't want to pay for the bag, would you just hand me my food items directly out of the window,' Shakur asked.

According to NBC this is not the case, McDonald's still provides bags for customers food even when no bags are selected as an option when ordering on the franchise's app.

Chick-Fil-A locations in the area are also charging customers for bags, some have been doing so for months, NBC reported.

Other have out up signs at their restaurants informing customers they may be charged for their bags.

The move by fast food chains has angered customers such as Shakur who told NBC the chains should 'just eat the cost.'

'McDonald's is one of the oldest established standing fast-food franchises in all of the entire world because they're a global brand' Shakur argued.

'You're not going to lose anything by eating this cost of 10 cents.'
