Renters looking for a spacious apartment on a budget should head to the South and Midwest, according to new research.

More than half of the top 20 large cities which offer the most square footage for a $1,500 monthly rent are in the Southeast and Southwest, a new report from RentCafe reveals.

Wichita, Kansas, offers as much as 1,359 square-feet for the budget - the most of any large city in the US - which is the equivalent of a whole house.

It is almost six times as much space as a renter would get in Manhattan, New York, where $1,500 affords a measly 228 square-feet.

Nationwide, $1,500 translates to 729 square-feet of apartment space on average, RentCafe found. But in certain areas renters on a fixed budget can afford more spacious apartments.

Toledo, Ohio, ranked second on the list for big cities with the most apartment space available for $1,500 - at an average of 1,345 square-feet.

This is enough space for three or even four bedrooms, according to RentCafe.

Next are a few locations in the South. In Oklahoma City, renters can get 1,302 square-feet for a monthly rental rate of $1,500, which typically means a three-bedroom home.

Similarly in Tulsa, renters can typically afford 1,277 square-feet of apartment space.

Fifth on the list is Memphis, Tennessee, which offers renters an average of 1,257 square-feet for the budget - the equivalent of a three-bedroom apartment.

The study lays bare just how great the rental divide is across different parts of the US.

In Manhattan, New York, which is home to the most expensive rental market in the country, $1,500 only affords residents an average of 228 feet.

This is the equivalent of a really tight studio apartment.

Across the bridge in Brooklyn, the same monthly budget gets renters 300 square-feet.

Fellow New York City borough Queens is also among the places where a $1,500 budget will get renters less than 400 square-feet of space - at precisely 370 square-feet.

In Boston, Massachusetts, which ranked third on the list of places with the least amount of space for the budget, renters can afford about 315 square feet, RentCafe found.

Jersey City, New Jersey - which is one of the most competitive rental markets in the Northeast - rounds out the top five cities offering the fewest square feet within that same budget.

Here, apartment seekers can get 340 square-feet for $1,500 per month.

California, which is notorious for its high housing costs, also dominates the lists of cities offering the least space for the sum, with 32 out of the top 50.

San Francisco offers just 334 square-feet, while Los Angeles, San Jose, and San Diego provide around 440 square feet - typically enough for a small studio.
