Is this America's most dangerous airport? Calls to move Utah travel hub notorious for plane crashes because of VERY challenging terrain

A Utah airport notorious for plane crashes has sparked debate about the safety of its location, with local officials calling for the facility to be relocated.

Roy Mayor Robert Dandoy is leading the charge to move the airport, after a series of plane crashes near Utah's Ogden-Hinckley Airport in recent years.

The latest incident occurred just last Wednesday when a small plane crashed into the yard of a home in Roy, a suburb of Ogden.

While both pilots survived with injuries, the close call has sparked concerns about the airport's safety record, due to its proximity to residential areas and challenging terrain.

In 2017, another fatal crash occurred on one of the city's major roadways.

In 2019, a small plane crashed on a Utah highway after it made an emergency landing on the same highway last year.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Allen Kenitzer says the single-engine plane hit a billboard and crashed near Ogden-Hinckley Airport on Interstate 15.

Again in 2020, a plane crash damaged two homes in Roy, resulting in fatalities.

The most recent crash happened just northwest of Roy High School.

'It was a miracle that those two pilots survived,' Dandoy told KSL, referring to the recent crash.

'And it certainly was a miracle that (the) aircraft didn't land on the top of one of those houses,'

'I can't even imagine how it was able to weave through all of that and those people survived it, but that's not always going to be the case.'

The mayor is also concerned about the fact that three schools lie within the airport's flight path, putting hundreds of students potentially at risk.

Dandoy suggests relocating the airport to 'west Weber,' an area with more open space and away from residential areas.

'Where we have wide open spaces lots of places, (we would) certainly be able to control encroachment, if it was moved out to west Weber,' Dandoy said.

He mentioned the relocation of St. George Airport, which was moved to a more remote location after failing to meet Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) standards.

However, not everyone agrees with the proposed solution.

Erik Johanson, a pilot who regularly flies out of Ogden-Hinckley, argues against relocation:

'That's not a solution,' Johanson told 2KUTV. 'You can't move this airport. There are too many resources here, there's been too much invested in it.'

'Ogden Airport sees around 290 flights a day,' he added.
