A couple who met two decades ago through the pro-infidelity dating site Ashley Madison has revealed they have zero regrets and feel that their marriage is as happy as can be.
Back in 2004, Michael Oshust and Stephania Meyer, of Nova Scotia, were both married to other people but neither marriage was going well, as they told Business Insider.
Michael, 55, was in the midst of a divorce with his wife, who he'd been with for six-and-a-half years.
For her part, Stephania, 52, had been with her now-ex husband 11 years, and had two daughters with him - but was desperately unhappy and leaning toward divorce.
Back in 2004, Michael Oshust, 55, and Stephania Meyer, 52, were both married to other people - but neither marriage was going well
As Michael was amidst a divorce, and Stephania's split with her husband was imminent, the two separately decided to sign up for Ashley Madison
Stephania and her ex had in fact implicitly agreed to put off splitting up until after the next Christmas to give their daughters one last holiday together as a family.
At the same time, Ashley Madison was ramping up its marketing efforts, and would soon gain widespread notoriety for its tagline: 'Life is short. Have an affair.'
'I heard numerous radio ads for Ashley Madison and it peaked some curiosity as I was missing companionship in my marriage,' Stephania told DailyMail.com in 2019, then on the occasion of their 15th anniversary.
The brazen way that the service championed infidelity even led to its ads being banned in Singapore in 2013 for its 'flagrant disregard of our family values and public morality.'
Still, it gave Michael, then an IT project manager, a discreet option for starting to date other people with the finalization of his divorce not yet realized.
As for Stephania, then a stay-at-home mom, she claimed that she had initially signed up out of curiosity rather than with the express intent of finding an affair partner.
In any case, the pair, both based in Ontario at the time, found each other through Ashley Madison and began chatting.
Michael described to BI that both were 'yearning' for a deeper connection and 'intellectual conversations.'
After six weeks of exchanging messages, the two met for the first time in real life at a coffee shop - and the rest is history
Stephania and Michael went ahead and tied the knot in a 2007 wedding in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, with two friends in attendance
Stephania recalled that most of her messages were requesting nudes - but only Michael had asked her how she was.
They also bonded over a shared affinity for the same rock music.
'It intrigued me, so I just sent a little note back,' Stephania told the outlet. 'And then we just kept messaging. We had so much to talk about.
'It got to the point where every day I'd get the kids off to school and race home to get online just to chat with Michael.'
She eventually began developing real feelings for her new online beau.
'It scared me because I'm not a cheater per se,' she admitted, adding: 'It just felt so different. Natural, even.'
Six weeks after their first messages were exchanged, the duo met in person at a coffee shop in October 2004.
'I opened the door, and I gently gave her a nice kiss. And that was the best feeling I'd ever had in my life at that point,' Michael recalled to BI.
After relocating from Ontario to Nova Scotia in the years after their wedding, the two opened and currently run a house-painting business
From there, they kept seeing each other more and more frequently, but keeping everything clandestine.
Nonetheless, it only took a month from their first in-person meeting for Stephania's husband discover emails from Michael and realized what was going on.
From there, he kicked her out of the house.
After her divorce was finalized, Stephania recalled her ex admitting that he knew something was going on as she'd started to glow and take better care of herself.
It didn't take long for Stephania and Michael to move in together - in a location nearby her two girls, who were then five and seven years old.
Though Stephania did her best to be a constant presence in her daughters' lives, she was devastated when they eventually cut off contact with her, even blocking her 'on everything.'
And she became something of a pariah amongst her other family and some friends.
But she and Michael were undeterred and went ahead with tying the knot in 2007, in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, with two friends in attendance.
Eventually, the two relocated to Nova Scotia and now co-own a house-painting business.
Two decades after their first meeting, Stephania reflected of their relationship: 'I wouldn't trade it for the world.'
