The Olympic couples scoring gold in game of love - from Italian sports stars who won medals just minutes apart to a photo-finish proposal

For some athletes, the 2024 Olympics is a bit of a love affair - because they're competing alongside their partners.

That's right, a slew of sports stars and their significant others are both going for gold at the Games in Paris.

Take American fencers Lee Kiefer and Gerek Meinhardt, for example. 

They fell in love after bonding at the Tokyo Olympics three years ago, and now, they're both in France to compete for Team USA.

But others aren't even representing the same country, like British tennis pro Katie Boulter and Australian tennis player Alex De Minaur.

And while one might think that trying to achieve gold for different countries may cause tension in their romance, they have certainly proved otherwise. 

Whether they're competing for the same team or not, these couples could not be more supportive of one another, and their love stories have captured viewers all across the globe.

From the pair who won medals just minutes apart from one another to the lovers who got engaged at the finish line of a race - here are all the couples who are competing at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Katie Boulter and Alex De Minaur 

British pro Katie and Australian Alex, who have been dating for more than four years, both competed in the Olympics this year for their respective countries.

However, Alex, 25, was cut from the Games early on after he and his doubles partner lost their first round against Team USA rivals Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram.

As for Katie, 28, she made it a little farther but ultimately lost, along with her partner, Heather Watson, against Italian duo Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini on Thursday.

Katie and Alex first started dating in March 2020 after they ran into each other while both staying at the same hotel.

However, Alex, 25, was cut from the Games early on; as for Katie, 28, she made it a little farther but ultimately lost on Thursday

Katie told The Sydney Morning Herald that she had heard a little about Alex through mutual friends, and decided to approach him after she saw him in the lobby.

'We bumped into each other at six in the morning and ended up getting a coffee,' she recalled. 

They immediately hit it off as she added, 'From that moment, I knew I was in it for the long haul.'

Soon after they got together, however, the COVID-19 pandemic forced them to be physically apart as they were locked down in different countries. 

But that didn't stop their bond from growing even stronger.

'I was in Spain under house arrest and she was in the UK, so we had months of talking on FaceTime,' Alex explained.

'I think I realized this was becoming something special when I found myself wanting to talk to her all the time.

'Her companionship was something I'd been looking for: it gave me a sense of peace.'

Since then, the two have been branded as one of tennis' top 'power couples,' and they're often seen supporting one another at their matches.

Gael opened up about parenthood last year and heaped praise on his wife.

'She's a great mother. That's first. People want to put tennis first but I think she's a great mother first,' he gushed.

'This is the most important for me as her husband because of course we are a tennis couple but life is beyond our sport.'

He has also opened up about the difficulties of having to be away from his daughter due to his career. 

'It's hard. I'm going to Dubai next week so it'll be four weeks... that I haven't seen her and it's a long time at that age when she discovers lots of things,' he said. 

'We're very lucky that FaceTime exists, but it doesn't replace anything... Tennis is cool, but I miss my daughter... It's a challenge.'

Elina failed to make it to the quarter-finals after she lost to Czech Republic's Barbora Krejcikova at the 2024 Olympics, while Gael lost to Italy's Lorenzo Musetti ahead of the semi-finals.

The Olympics have been a huge part of American fencers Lee and Gerek's romance, as it was what initially brought them together.

And Lee, 30, has already achieved just that, earning a gold medal on Monday for the second time in a row.

The men's team foil will take place on Sunday, so only time will tell if Gerek, 34, will get a medal too.

Gregorio, 29, still has two more races to go, and while Rossella, 33, missed his first because of her own event, she promised she would be in the crowd cheering him on during the rest.

'He still has more opportunities to win medals and I will be here to watch all of them,' she said.

'I'm on holiday now and I will be supporting him. I will try to keep him calm and make him enjoy everything. He's in good shape and I hope for the best for him.'
