Dexter Morgan's shock return for the second time in Dexter: Resurrection in 2025 has stunned and delighted fans - after his bloody death in 2021 reboot, New Blood.

Michael C. Hall - who has played the serial killing blood spatter analyst since the show's 2006 debut - made the announcement at San Diego Comic Con last week - and would only reveal that 'it's very cold' when asked how Dexter could possibly return from the dead.

Hall, 53, will also voice the inner Dexter on prequel Original Sin - which sees Patrick Gibson play Dexter as he graduates from college and transitions to a serial killer -  while starting his blood spatter career at Miami Metro.

Dexter's serial killing journey - following the code of his beloved father Harry (James Remar) - has seen him take down countless fearsome murderers  including his own biological brother the Ice Truck Killer and the Brain Surgeon who inflicted devastating injuries on his adopted sister Deb (Jennifer Carpenter).

He also slayed the notorious Trinity Killer who had been murdering undetected for decades - but it was later revealed the murderer had one-upped him at the last moment - killing Dexter's wife Rita (Julie Benz) hours before his death.

Dexter took on his biggest criminal to date when he hunted Little Chino (Matthew Willig) who was a hitman for the 29th Street Kings. Chino stood at 6'8" and weighed 278lbs during his appearance in season two.

Chino was a known murderer who had escaped justice due to killing witnesses. He was accused of killing a member of his gang - whose crime scene Dexter attended.

Dexter - still reeling from his murder of his brother Brian - saw Chino as the perfect target after the son's mother Eva Arenas named him as the killer.

Dexter captured Chino for the first time by filling his car with live chickens to distract him - and injecting him with two M99 syringes.

A frail Dexter accidentally severely cut Chino's cheek while doing his blood slide and failed to use enough plastic to secure him - leading Chino to escape.

Trinity first comes to the attention of Dexter when retired FBI Special Agent Frank Lundy (who led the hunt for the Bay Harbor Butcher in season two) arrives in Miami to investigate the apparent suicide death of a young woman in a bath.

Reuniting with former lover Deb and Dexter, Lundy (Keith Carradine) reveals he is hunting a meticulous killer who murders in cycles of threes, a young woman with her femoral artery slashed in a bathtub, a married mother-of-two who falls off a building and a father-of-two bludgeoned to death.

After Lundy's murder, Dexter steals his audio tapes and arrives at the scene of the proposed bludgeoning, seeing Trinity beating to death a coffee bar worker.

Following him home, he realizes Trinity is a family man with two children - before deciding to befriend him so he can be a better husband and father, while being a serial killer.

Posing as Kyle Butler, he joins Trinity's church and assists with his charity housing project - but soon realizes Mitchell is a fraud and physically and emotionally abusive to his family.

Dexter saves the child Trinity has abducted from being buried alive in cement.

Dexter went after a family-killing cop in season four episode - Dex Takes A Holiday.

Intrigued by a 'questionable blood swipe' mentioned at a blood spatter conference, Dexter starts hunting Pembroke Pines Police Department Officer Zoe Kruger (Christina Cox) - whose young daughter and husband were allegedly shot to death by criminal Darius Rae.

Kruger herself was shot and injured - but his fellow blood spatter analyst in Pembroke Pines says he believes she shot herself, and provoked a confrontation with Rae so she could acquire his blood and plant it in the house.

After examining the crime scene photos, Dexter theorizes she was wearing blue gloves when she shot herself.

After posing as a prospective buyer at Kruger's open house - and flirting with the killer - he finds pieces of the gloves in the garbage disposal.

His cover is blown after Kruger realizes he requested the case file for her case - pulling him over and making a veiled threat, revealing she knows his home address.

Dexter wants to call off the hunt - but the ghost of Harry reminds him that Zoe is a cold-blooded killer who knows where he and his family live.

He decides to 'bat the beehive' -  leading Kruger to follow him to a gas station, pull a gun and say: 'You're trying to rape me.' He retorts: 'I'm not even touching you' before using forensics knowledge to blow apart Kruger's plan to shoot him in faked self-defense

Dexter faced his final nemesis in season eight - when warped serial killer The Brain Surgeon began terrorizing Miami.

The case unfolds when Dexter is called to the scene of a crime where a man has been shot and dumped. It is revealed the skull had been sawed into and a part of the brain extracted.

Miami Metro bring in neuropsychiatrist Dr. Evelyn Vogel (Charlotte Rampling) who reveals the killer extracted the anterior insular cortex, the part of the brain that processes empathy.

She later reveals she is responsible for the code that Dexter was taught by his father Harry - and brands him the 'perfect psychopath.'

She wants Dexter's help after a piece of brain was left on her doorstep - suspecting one of the psychopaths she has previously treated is the killer.

As The Brain Surgeon claims more victims - and suspects  are ruled out - it is discovered that the biological son of Vogel - Daniel - is the killer.

Daniel murdered his younger brother Richard in a pool when he was 14 and is sent to a psychiatric institute by his grieving parents- which he later burns down. Richard is believed dead for years.

It emerges that Daniel is now living under the name Oliver Saxon (Darri Ingolfsson) - and he is already in Dexter's life - previously dating Dexter's neighbor Cassie (Bethany Joy Lenz) who was found brutally murdered.

He later murders his own mother without a second thought in front of Dexter - before suggesting they call a truce and go their separate ways.

As Dexter prepares to kill Oliver he realizes he has more of a desire to be with Hannah (Yvonne Strahovski) and doesn't need to kill Oliver - and leaves him for Deb to arrest as he flees to Argentina

Eight years after furor erupted over the season eight finale of Dexter - which showed the killer becoming a reclusive lumberjack - Dexter: New Blood attempted to right the wrongs and finally end of the life of its protagonist.

Dexter - going under the name of Jim Lindsey and working at a local wilderness sporting gear store in Iron Lake, New York - is left startled when his son Harrison (Jack Alcott)  shows up after 10 years without his dad.

Harrison is revealed to have his own Dark Passenger after witnessing his mother's murder as a baby by Trinity - with Dexter's own need to kill swiftly resurfacing after 10 years.

As the pair investigate serial killer Kurt Caldwell - who Dexter later murders - Dexter is caught in a web of lies by his former Police Chief lover who eventually realizes that he is a murderer and living under a false identity.

He later breaks his own code and murders Sgt. Logan (Alano Miller) to escape, despite him not having done anything to warrant Dexter's usual punishment.

As he and Harrison prepare to flee, Harrison rows with Dexter over Logan's murder.

They realize the only way for Harrison to be 'normal' is for Dexter to die and he orchestrates his own murder.

He instructs Harrison to shoot him with the rifle in the heart to atone for his failures as a father and to set his son free.
