A 71-year-old convicted rapist who has been on the run for 30 years was taken into custody after he was stopped by traffic police in Iowa for breaking a simple rule.

George Hartleroad was stopped by officers for not having a rear reflector on his bicycle in West Des Moines in June.

Video shows the bearded fugitive identify himself as 'Gregory Stallins' and tell the officer that he is homeless man living in Iowa since 1991 when they asked him for identification.

But suspecting that something may be wrong after realizing that the person behind Hartleroad's fake alias was dead, the officer found him again about 30 minutes later and began to question him further.

'I don't want to arrest you for the stopping without a rear reflector because, like I told you, I stop people to let them know because I don't want it to be your fault when you get hit, but if I can't verify who you are and the info you did give me comes back to nobody,' the officer told Hartleroad.

'In fact, it comes back to other people. That's a bigger issue,' the cop added.

In the video, the officer then asks the fugitive whether he has any arrest warrants against his name and requests to see his driver's license.

But Hartleroad sticks to his claim that he's Stallins and say that he has not 'had a driver's license in years.'

The officer ultimately reveals that he knows Stallinsis dead and warns Hartleroad to tell the truth about his identity.

'Time to be honest with me, OK? So, the info you gave me comes back to a dead guy. Gregory Stallins is dead,' the officer can be heard threatening.

But Hartleroad refuses to give up his actual identity and continues to insist that he is Stallins.

'You're Gregory, you're just not dead?' the baffled officer asks.

'I'm not dead,' Hartleroad responds.

At one point, the cop asks him to remove his hat and glasses so he can get a picture for facial recognition which is when the fugitive admits to his real identity.

The officer then learned he had been wanted by authorities in Wisconsin since 1994 when he escaped from a halfway house.

'Time to be honest with me, OK? So, the info you gave me comes back to a dead guy. Gregory Stallins is dead,' the officer can be heard threatening.

According to the New York Post, Hartleroad was convicted of rape in 1983 and served five years in prison.

As the officers takes him in custody, he can be heard saying: 'I will jump again as soon as they turn me loose. They’ve been up in my ass for … 41 years now on a 9-year sentence.'

Hartleroad is currently at the Dane County Jail in Madison, Wisconsin, according to inmate records.
