A Houston mother-of-five who was arrested for leaving four of her children in a locked car on a scorching summer day to buy pizza has broken her silence.
Destiny Morales was taken into custody on Thursday and charged with child abandonment with intent to return, according to Harris County Constable Precinct 4.
The young mother went into the Sam's Club at 300 block of E Richey Road to pick up up pizza leaving her children unattended in a locked car for over 40 minutes - on a day temperatures hovered in the mid-90s' - with the heat index making it feel more like 109 degrees, as per the National Weather Service.
Horrified witnesses called police to alert them that children were alone in a locked vehicle. They said the car was running and the children were heard yelling. Some were visibly sweating and appeared flushed, according to a news release.
Morales told Fox26 Houston that she 'would never harm' her children and felt like what was reported was the 'opposite of what happened,' but also admitted that she 'did mess up' and felt remorse.

The young mother was arrested and booked into the Harris County Jail before she bonded out, but it is unclear what the bail amount was and when her next court date is
Morales told authorities she was only in the store for 30 minutes, but during the investigation police said the time was closer to 46 minutes.
The young mother said the AC was on and told them her children were not locked inside the vehicle, Fox5 reported.
When police arrived they discovered that the air conditioning was on in the vehicle, but said the vents were blowing out warm air rather than cool air on the nearly three-digit day.
Emergency responders arrived on the scene and the children were evaluated.
Child Protective Services were also contacted.
After Morales ordered the pizza and walked outside she saw that her children were already outside the car.
She saw some of the store employees looking after her children and she was arrested shortly after.
Morales told the news outlet while she was waiting to pick up her food her daughter ran inside the store because she and her brother were fighting.
It is unclear what ages Morales' children are.
Morales who was clearly upset by what had taken place told the news outlet, 'I take care of my kids. I love my kids. I do so much.
She added: 'One mistake and this ruins my whole name, my character.'

Morales who was taken to the Harris County Jail bonded out, though her bond information was not released.
She is currently awaiting a court date.
According to the latest figures from the National Safety Council, there have been 18 hot car deaths, so far, in 2024. In 2023, the total number was 29.
