Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is trying to downplay Vice President Kamala Harris's newly announced running mate Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz's extreme liberal record.
Pelosi had reportedly been working behind the scenes to try and get Walz, who served in Congress from 2006-2019 and whom she is 'fond of,' onto Harris' ticket.
And her efforts paid off after Harris announced she was selecting the governor to join her as her running mate as she aims for the presidency in November.
But now, Pelosi is offering a bizarre explanation about her former colleague's well-known progressive record as he faces a tough battle to win over middle-of-the-road Americans.
Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi defended her former House colleague Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Vice President Kamala harris's running mate pick, as a moderate Tuesday morning just before he was selected for the VP job. It has been reported Pelosi was 'fond' of Walz getting the powerful position
Pelosi snapped back at MSNBC host Joe Scarborough - a Democrat and former House member - when he suggested Walz is 'progressive.'
'Tim Walz is wonderful. He served in the House,' Pelosi said. 'To characterize him as left is so unreal. He's right down the middle.'
'He's a Heartland of America Democrat, and as chair of our Veterans Affairs Committee made tremendous gains for our veterans,' she continued.
Republicans, meanwhile, were quick to attack Walz on his record, particularly his oversight of Minneapolis, the epicenter of the 2020 George Floyd riots and destruction.
'Harris-Walz: most left-wing ticket in American history,' Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis posted on X Tuesday.
'Minnesota was ground zero for the BLM riots of 2020. Harris egged it on and Walz sat by and let Minneapolis burn.'
Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., another former colleague of Walz called him the 'most liberal 'nominee' to ever appear on a presidential ballot.'
He 'has now chosen a progressive running mate who has voiced support for socialism, supports sanctuary cities, and wants to give driver's licenses to the millions of illegal aliens Kamala Harris has allowed into our country.'
'No amount of spin from the campaign or the media can distract from the objective facts and the disastrous records of Harris and Walz,' the Republican continued.
There are reports Biden is angry at Pelosi for her role in his ouster. Pelosi was working behind-the-scenes to try and calm panicked Democrats after Biden's first debate performance, where he stared into space and struggled to answer questions
Pelosi was reportedly critical to Joe Biden's campaign cancellation which prompted Vice President Kamala Harris's rise to the top of the party's ticket. Harris was largely seen as more electable by Capitol Hill Democrats, allegedly prompting Pelosi to speak frankly with Biden about his dwindling party support
The current and former speakers of the House could not paint a more divergent picture of Walz, indicating the pair's differing objectives.
Johnson wants to remind voters of Walz 'progressive' record.
And Pelosi will shine Walz in a moderate light to broaden the appeal of the Democratic ticket to moderate voters.
But this is not her first maneuver in the 2024 race.
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Harris's pick for running mate, oversaw Minnesota during the George Floyd riots of 2020
Reports indicate that Pelosi played a critical role in relaying messages from worried Capitol Hill Democrats to the White House and Biden's allies ahead of his withdrawal.
Eventually the news reaching Biden and his allies was so dire that he decided to drop his reelection bid, to the celebration of Pelosi and her fellow Democrats.
Publicly, however, she always said she trusted Biden would make the right decision.
There are also reports Biden is angry at her for her role in his ouster.
But since his dropping out, Pelosi has not spoken to the president, she revealed on CNN Monday.
Nancy Pelosi said 'you'd have to ask' Joe Biden about the state of their relationship after the former speaker of the house admitted she hasn't spoken to him since he ended his re-election campaign
She was asked by Dana Bash: 'Have you spoken to President Biden since he dropped out?'
'No,' the 84-year-old Pelosi - whose official title is now 'Speaker Emerita' after stepping down as speaker in 2023 - responded.
Bash then questioned: 'Is everything ok with your relationship?'
And then the veteran Democrat leader gave a surprising answer.
'You'd have to ask him,' Pelosi she said.
