California Governor Gavin Newsom has announced that the state's national guard prosecutors will be taking over Alameda County cases, in a blow to progressive district attorney Pamela Price.
Newsom made the announcement on Monday, months after the California Highway Patrol was expanded and deployed in Oakland to help assist local authorities with crime.
The Democrat said national guard's Counterdrug Task Force has finalized an agreement with California Department of Justice that is 'modeled after a successful partnership established in San Francisco with District Attorney Brooke Jenkins, which has helped boost felony narcotics convictions in San Francisco.'
Newsom added: 'I am grateful for the quick work here by the Attorney General and the California National Guard to swiftly finalize this agreement so these talented attorneys can soon help secure justice for the people of the Bay Area.'

Earlier this year the governor rescinded an offer to send prosecutors to Oakland to crack down on rising crime in the San Francisco Bay Area city, where brazen robberies in broad daylight have drawn national attention.
At the time Newson said that Price's office did not benefit from the offer because it missed the deadline to apply - which Price denied.
In response to Gavin's move, Price issued a statement saying she welcomes the state prosecutors.
Price added: 'We hope the swift agreement reached between the DOJ and CalGuard yields equally swift results, and my office is willing to assist in that effort in any way possible.'
Newsom has also deployed over 100 California Highway Patrol officers to also help with targeted crackdowns on criminal activity in Oakland, a city of 400,000 people across the bay from San Francisco.
San Francisco has seen a spike in violent crimes, including serious drug-related offenses, retail theft, and auto burglaries, even though crime in other California urban centers is falling.

The prosecutor is battling a recall just two years after she was elected in November 2022, several months after San Francisco voters ousted Chesa Boudin from the top prosecutor’s job.
Like Price, Boudin was also a political newcomer in his first term as district attorney whose critics collected enough signatures to put the issue to voters.
Prior to taking office, Price was a civil rights attorney who championed women, victims of domestic violence and youth caught up in the criminal justice system.
Her opponents say she has emboldened criminals at a time when Oakland, the county’s most populous city, reported a rise in crime, prompting Gov. Gavin Newsom to send in highway patrol officers and state prosecutors to help.
Her supporters say Price has been targeted by wealthy conservatives who do not want to reform a flawed and racist criminal justice system. They say she should have more time to make good on her campaign promises.
