With the Olympics past the halfway point in Paris, athletes from around the world are ready to let their hair down now that their events are over - and an Australian sporting great has confirmed the antics inside the village are wild.

Diver Matthew Mitcham, who won gold in the 10m platform at the 2008 Games in Beijing, labelled the scenes a 'bizarre utopia where everyone is tall, beautiful and perfect'.

He said many athletes will look to leave Paris with memories of a lifetime - and it won't necessarily be from their sporting pursuits.

'Athletes definitely just wanna bonk athletes,' Mitcham told News Corp.

'The Olympic village is a smorgasbord. You've got every possible shape and size and ethnicity.'

He added that some of the competitors will be keen to hook up with famous non-competitors who have flocked to the French capital to see the action, explaining, 'Athletes are just as big a star f**kers as everybody else.'

The after-hours development comes as dating apps have seen a surge in users around the Olympic village as thousands of athletes converged on the city looking for hook-ups.

Sites such as Tinder, Bumble and Hinge have seen a spike in use in the St Denis area  - the location of the competitors' base - as hundreds of new users swipe in a bid to find love.

Mitcham said the gay dating app Grindr has put restrictions in place to stop non-athletes from finding Olympics competitors' profiles.

'That's because of thirsty queens in the outside world desperately trying to bonk an athlete inside the village,' Mitcham said.

As one sprinter told Daily Mail Australia: 'When you pack 14,500 of the world's fittest athletes into an Olympic village… you can guess what will happen.

'Before the Games there's not much bed-hopping. But once competition starts, we go mad for it.'

Organisers distributed some 200,000 condoms at various points around the village complex - equivalent to 14 for every athlete.

And the free condoms are available in blue, red, green and purple - the official colours of the Paris 2024 Games.

Athletes were also given tubes of lubricant to further replicate their sexual dalliances.

Accounts of wild celebrations at previous Olympic Games are the stuff of legend.

Perhaps the most famous athlete of modern times, Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt, was rumoured to have enjoyed a lively all-night party with three members of Sweden's handball team shortly after he stormed to victory in the 100m final at London 2012.

And at the Sydney Games in 2000, a Team USA shooter stated: 'I'd never witnessed that level of debauchery in my whole life.

'My apartment was like a brothel in the Olympic village.

'The entire women's 4x100 relay team of a Scandinavian-looking country walked out of the house one morning, followed by the USA track and field fellas.'

Earlier this month, Australian swimming great Cate Campbell set pulses racing after revealing in a radio interview which sports will do the most hooking up with other Olympics stars in Paris.

The retired pool star said rowers, water polo players and rugby stars are the athletes who are most likely to get frisky in the Olympic village, despite the so-called 'anti-sex' cardboard beds that have caused controversy in the official accommodation.

And in late July it was revealed Australian athletes, team members and journalists covering the 2024 Games were presented with a unique offer by a Paris strip club.

An adult cabaret and restaurant venue called Secret Square encouraged those involved with the Games to come to their venue by offering free entry.

The risque venue, located 19 kilometers from the athletes' village, is known for the art of 'French striptease' and is open until 4am.

'During their stay in Paris, athletes, their team and journalists covering the event won't have to pay the entrance fee,' a spokesperson told TMZ.

Those seeking entry can claim the special offer by showing their Olympic credentials on arrival to the club.
