American swimming icon Michael Phelps couldn't help but be disappointed at the worst United States men's Olympic performance in nearly seven decades.

The US men's swim team only managed a single individual gold medal when Bobby Finke swam to a victory in the 1500m freestyle.

But the US men only managed five other individual medals - two silver and three bronze - in one of their worst overall performances at an Olympic games.

The Americans have routinely been dominant at swimming, but the last time they walked out with only a single men's individual medal was at the 1956 Olympic games in Melbourne.

It left Phelps shaking his head as the men struggled in the pool throughout their entire time in Paris.

'For me, as a whole, I was pretty disappointed to see the U.S. swimming results,' Phelps told USA Today in an interview last week.

'One of the things that I've always said the last few years is the rest of the world is catching up. I think a lot of the things that we've done as a country for so long, the other people are catching up.

'They're doing the same thing. Hopefully, we're able to make that transition leading into 2028.'

Caeleb Dressel, who was expected to be a heavy lifter for the Americans after snagging five gold medals at the Tokyo Games, didn't win a single individual medal despite being a favorite in the 100m butterfly and the 50m freestyle.

But Phelps did praise Bobby Finke for his success in the 1500m freestyle - when he shattered the world record in the process.

'Finke last night, swimming that was unbelievable. I have chills right now talking about it. That was one of the best swims in the entire Olympics,' Phelps said.

'Being able to break that world record in the matter that he did it, just taking it out, challenging the other guys just to make a move, he was prepared. Hopefully the other athletes will be more prepared heading into '28.'

As a whole, the Americans still dominated in the pool thanks to the women's team - netting the USA more gold medals and more overall medals than any other country.
