Florida couple are facing child abuse charges after allegedly leaving their two-year-old son locked inside a hot car while they shopped at a Target store in Aventura over the weekend.

Paola Palencia-Rodriguez, 24, and Melvin Alejandro Jaimes, 25, were arrested on Saturday and charged with one count each of child abuse without great bodily harm and leaving a child under six unattended in a vehicle.

According to an arrest report, a bystander spotted the young boy sleeping in the car, which was parked in the Target parking lot with the windows rolled up and the ignition turned off.

The witness said the child was 'sweaty, warm to the touch, and awake and crying,' and sitting in his own vomit. The parents had left him for 30 minutes.

Now, the parents have spoken out - saying that they 'didn't see it as bad' as they thought they could quickly get groceries while the child was inside the car.

The good Samaritan was able to convince the toddler to unlock the car door, and police were promptly called to the scene around 11:15am.

The temperature at the time was in the low 90s, with an active tropical storm and tornado watch in the area.

Surveillance footage showed the child had been left alone in the vehicle for 30 minutes before being discovered.

During their first court appearance, Judge Mindy Glazer scolded the couple, telling them they were 'lucky' to be standing before her and not 'planning a child's funeral.'

Both Palencia-Rodriguez and Jaimes have been released on $2,500 bond, and are due back in court next month to face the disturbing charges

'It was 90 degrees out. And you are lucky you are here today in court rather than a child's funeral,' Glazer said.

The distraught parents told NBC6 that it was simply 'a mistake' and that they were in a rush to get groceries, but didn't want to wake their sleeping son.

'I just thought since he was sleeping, I didn't see it as bad … but I recognize it was a mistake,' Palencia-Rodriguez told the outlet in Spanish.

Both Palencia-Rodriguez and Jaimes have been released on $2,500 bond, and are due back in court next month to face the disturbing charges.
