Gmail is down for users worldwide, leaving them unable to send emails or access their accounts.

The outage hit the Google service at around 3pm ET, which is plaguing users in the US, the UK, parts of Europe, Australia, Asia and South America.

More than 1.8 billion people across the globe use Gmail, but the number of those impacted Thursday is unknown.

Users shared their frustrations about the email service issues on X, with some sharing screen shots showing an error message that reads: 'Oops, something went wrong.'

DownDetector, a site that monitors online issues, showed users reported problems with Gmail throughout the day, but a complete outage hit in the afternoon.

That is when most Americans are in the middle of their workday.

Approximately 82 percent of issues reported to DownDetector cited sending emails, while 15 percent cited server connection and a small three percent is linked to the website.

Gmail is the most popular email provider globally - it is used in over 170 countries and territories.

Google's Workspace dashboard shows service disruptions for ChromeOS, Gmail, and Google Drive.

'Our engineering team continues to investigate the issue,' the company shows on the site.

'Gmail: Users trying to send emails or save drafts with attachments would experience failures.'

The alert also notes that there is no workaround at this time.
