How Snoop Dogg, 52, went from pimp and a murder charge to loveable 'grandpa' rubbing shoulders with royals after befriending Martha Stewart and making a children's album

He's a one-time drug dealer and former LA gang member who was acquitted of murder in 1996, but Snoop Dogg has nonetheless managed to overcome his 'gangsta' reputation to become somewhat of a 'grandpa' figure.

The 52-year-old turned out to be an unofficial champion of the Olympics this summer when working for American channel NBC; he carried the Olympic flame for a short leg in the final relay before popping up at several events in Paris.

He also performed at the closing ceremony and even featured in a star-studded clip alongside the Prince and Princess of Wales this weekend as they praised Team GB for their efforts in the games.

But his loveable persona is worlds away from his early days as a rapper, when his storied career began with an initial appearance on Dr. Dre's The Chronic (1992) and his own solo studio debut, Doggystyle (1993), which smashed rap sales records.

Shockingly, the release of Snoop's first album came shortly before his highly publicised trial, in which he and his bodyguard, McKinley Lee, were accused of the shooting and murder of a gang member called Philip Woldemariam.

Both were acquitted in 1996, and the Drop It Like It's Hot hitmaker continued to enjoy enormous mainstream success - achieved despite or possibly because of his murky past.

His career was said to have benefited massively from the publicity of the trial because he was seen to have genuine street credibility, and now, decades later, he's so mainstream he can seem as cuddly as a teddy bear.

Snoop's more light-hearted reputation started to come to light after the forming of his unlikely friendship with American entrepreneur Martha Stewart

Their friendly relationship has been the subject of public interest since they met in 2008 when he appeared on her TV cooking show, Martha. The duo made mashed potatoes together.

He reappeared on the program in 2009 to bake brownies with his friend. In 2016, they hosted the show Martha and Snoop's Potluck Dinner Party together - with the last season airing in 2020.

Discussing their relationship, Snoop told TMZ: 'Once we got together, you've seen that people love people. That's one thing about me and Martha's relationship that I love is that it unites people of all walks of life.

'They see two people that genuinely love each other and care for each other and that makes the world feel the same way.

'You can love somebody no matter where they from, what colour they are, where they were raised. It's all about getting together and understanding who they are and finding things you both enjoy and love.'

Snoop's diverse approach to endorsement has not only seen him team up with Martha for a cookbook range and a series of affiliated shows, it also includes animated cartoons, reality shows, personalised marijuana strains and the esports Gangsta Gaming League which have all enriched his coffers to the tune of $150million while endearing him to a wider public.

He previously stunned British TV viewers by starring in an advertising campaign for food delivery service Just Eat. His catchy jingle proved so popular that it even featured on his setlist when performing in London.

To add to his loveable character, Snoop, who has sold 37 million albums worldwide and is estimated to be worth $160 million, also released an animated YouTube series for children called Doggyland in 2022.

The series followed a cast of dogs who 'sing, dance and rap educational songs that teach social, emotional and cognitive skills for toddlers to 8yr old children in a positive and upbeat environment', according to its press release.

It has an accompanying album titled 'Doggyland - Kids Songs & Nursery Rhymes' that is available on streaming platforms.

Never one to shy away from a business endeavour, Snoop has also appeared in numerous films and television episodes, including Baby Boy, Scary Movie 5 and Starsky & Hutch.

Born in Long Beach, California, in 1971, the rapper (real name Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr.) was the middle child of three, nicknamed 'Snoopy' after his beloved mother Beverly Tate joked that he resembled the character from Peanuts.

He was raised by his mother and stepfather, Calvin Cordozar Broadus Sr, who he was named after. His father Vernell Varnado left the family only three months after Snoop's birth.

Beverly and Calvin Sr. divorced in 1975 and she raised her family in a church environment. Beverly died at the age of 70 on October 24, 2021 after an extended health battle.

Snoop went to the same school in LA as Cameron Diaz but it was his desire for money that saw the former choirboy's life take a decidedly downward turn as he joined notorious LA gang the Crips, 'got into drugs and guns' and started dealing cocaine.

Shortly after graduating from high school in 1989, he was arrested for trying to sell cocaine to an undercover police officer.

He was in and out of prison for drugs and gun offences over the next few years. And it was during one of his spells behind bars that fellow members of the Crips encouraged him to become a professional rapper. The move paid off - he became a superstar of rap.

But unlike other hip-hop stars whose pimp persona was entirely manufactured, he admitted in 2013 that he worked as a pimp back in 2003.

The No Guns Allowed rapper claims he managed several prostitutes and had a lot of famous clients, including top athletes.

He told the Rolling Stone magazine: 'I put an organisation together. I did a Playboy tour, and I had a bus follow me with ten b***hes on it. I could fire a b***h, f**k a b***h, get a new h*: It was my program.

'City to city, t***y to t***y, hotel room to hotel room, athlete to athlete, entertainer to entertainer... A lot of athletes bought p***y from me.'

However, Snoop insisted that he only did the job out of 'fascination' and never made any money from the illegal transactions.

He added: 'I'd act like I'd take the money from the b***h, but I'd let her have it. It was never about the money; it was about the fascination of being a pimp.

'As a kid I dreamed of being a pimp, I dreamed of having cars and clothes and b***hes to match.'

But his revelation about being a pimp is not the only controversy that's surrounded the rapper.

In 1993, he was charged with being an accessory in the fatal shooting of a member of a rival gang, who'd allegedly been killed by one of the star's bodyguards.

Prosecutors said Snoop had been driving the car from which the gun was fired. Despite the charge, which was later dismissed, he was controversially allowed to tour Britain. A tabloid headline reacted by proclaiming: 'Kick this evil b*****d out'.

Snoop subsequently – and extraordinarily – claimed that the late Queen personally intervened over moves to keep him out of Britain.

'The Queen said, 'This man has done nothing in our country. He can come,',' he told an interviewer two years ago.

In the same interview, he also claimed the Queen had alluded to the fact that Princes William and Harry were fans of his music.

He says he and the princes are longtime friends, telling the Guardian in 2015: 'They love my music, and it is what it is. There's a mutual love and respect.'

Meanwhile, in 2005, he and others were sued for assaulting a fan on stage, after allegedly failing to intervene as his bodyguards beat the victim unconscious.

In 2006, he and members of his entourage were arrested after being turned away from British Airways' First Class lounge at Heathrow. They got into a fight with police, which resulted in seven officers being injured, and vandalised a duty free shop.

The Home Office subsequently decided Snoop would be denied entry to the UK for the foreseeable future. That ban was lifted in 2010.

After it emerged that some of his entourage were convicted Crips members, in 2007, he was given a three-year suspended sentence and 800 hours of community service after pleading no contest to two felony charges of drug and gun possession by a convicted felon.

He's been in trouble with police as recently as 2015, when he was arrested in Sweden for illegal drugs use. He accused officers of racial profiling.

But he has sought to publicly distance himself from his unpleasant past in recent years. The father-of-four nowadays celebrates being a grandfather rather than an ex-criminal.

Snoop have even moderated his weed consumption and re-evaluated his lifestyle after becoming a grandfather because he wants to see his grandchildren grow old - despite employing a blunt roller who claims he smokes 150 joints a day.

The veteran rapper’s open appreciation for the drug has extended to numerous business ventures, among them edibles, weed strains and a digital media business devoted to marijuana related news.

But Snoop, the first notable celebrity to market their own line of marijuana products, insists his personal use was scrutinised after eldest child Cordé became a father to son Zion in 2015.

‘Being a grandfather has changed me in multiple ways,’ he told MailOnline. ‘The main way is being concerned with how I live, how I move, the kind of people I’m associated with, because I want to see my grandkids grow old.

‘The only way I can do that is to take precautionary steps as far as how I move, who I hang out with, where I go out, my intake, what am I intaking? Am I doing extra-curricular or am I just doing what I’m supposed to be doing?’

The rapper is said to smoke up to 150 joints a day according to his full-time blunt roller Renegade Piranha, who earns more than $50,000-a-year just to roll them.

Speaking in October, Piranha told Australia's The Kyle and Jackie O Show that her boss likes to smoke about half a pound of marijuana each day, the equivalent of 75 to 150 joints.

'I calculate it at over 450,000,' Piranha said during the interview on the number of blunts she's rolled for the rap artist.

Snoop is no stranger to weed and revealed in a 2013 Twitter Q&A that he smokes up to 81 blunts per day, consistent with Piranha's estimate.

The father-of-four is a parent to Cordé, 29, Cordell, 27, and Cori, 25, from his 27-year marriage to Shante Broadus, and son Julian, 26, from a former relationship with Laurie Holmond.

Snoop and Shante first met as teenagers when they attended Long Beach Polytechnic High School in the Long Beach neighborhood of Los Angeles.

Their romance even included going to dances and their high school prom together before graduating in 1989.

He was a full-fledged hip-hop star by the time he and Shante decided to tied-the-knot on June 14, 1997, at The Ritz Carlton Hotel in Los Angeles.

Like most relationships, it hasn't all been smooth sailing for Snoop and Shante, who briefly split in 2004, but ultimately reunited and eventually renewed their vows four years later in 2008.

'I thought I was the man, and I was willing to give up what I had at home for that until I realized that what I had at home was irreplaceable,' the 17-time Grammy Award nominee confessed to People of their reconciliation.
