Cadillac recalls almost every flagship Lyriq EV it has ever produced over terrifying braking issue

Nearly all of Cadillac's all-electric Lyriq SUVs are being recalled by parent company General Motors over a potentially catastrophic problem with their brakes.

The recall covers 2023 and 2024 all-wheel drive models, amounting to 21,469 vehicles in total.

Following the EV's debut in 2022, 22,370 Lyriqs have been sold in the U.S., meaning the recall affects roughly 95 percent of them.

The vehicle, which was plagued with production delays in its infancy, was recalled because the vehicle's anti-lock braking system (ABS) could activate unnecessarily and release brake pressure.

If this happens, the driver can lose the ability to brake, 'increasing the risk of a crash,' according to a Monday letter from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) addressed to a GM executive.

GM further explained in its safety recall report that the ABS, a safety feature that keeps wheels from locking if a driver slams the brakes, is susceptible to malfunctioning 'during certain braking events on dry surfaces at speeds below 25 mph.'

'In these conditions, if ABS falsely activates and a specific sequence of wheel movements occurs, the vehicle’s ABS system will continue to release the braking pressure in the vehicle's service brake system.

'A release of braking pressure can cause the service brakes to have reduced stopping performance or become inoperative, increasing the risk of a crash,'the report said.

The recall will not affect rear-wheel drive Lyriqs. Of the vehicles being recalled, GM estimates that 1 percent of them have the ABS issue.

Since defect was caused by a software bug, it will be remedied through a free update that car owners won't have to travel to the dealership to accept.

GM spokesperson Bill Grotz told the Detroit Free Press that dealers already have the fix and will be updating customers' cars 'later this month.'

The report from GM said the company opened up an investigation on May 31 into the 2023 and 2024 Lyriq models after the car maker received 'two reports of minor accidents resulting from an alleged loss of braking may have been attributable to a software issue in the vehicles’ ABS.'

The reports were received by GM on February 15 and March 12. The company was also made aware of a separate complaint that didn't result in an accident on October 14, 2023.

The Detroit-based car manufacturer decided to conduct the recall on August 1, and it hasn't identified any injuries or fatalities associated with the glitch.

Letters officially notifying owners impacted by the malfunction are expected to be mailed September 23.

Lyriq owners can also call Cadillac's customer service at 1-800-458-8006, the NHTSA filing stated. GM's number for this recall is N242453471.
