Colin Kaepernick has been offered a sensational return to the NFL - but as a coach, not as a quarterback.

LA Chargers boss Jim Harbaugh revealed on Wednesday that he wants the former 49ers star on his staff - and that Kaepernick is weighing up his offer.

The 36-year-old has not played in the NFL for eight years, since he took a knee during the national anthem and ignited nationwide controversy.

Kaepernick remains determined to rejoin the league, with the quarterback telling Sky Sports: 'We're still training, still pushing... we've just got to get one of these team owners to open up.'

Harbaugh - who coached Kaepernick on the 49ers between 2011 and 2014 - has offered the 36-year-old a route back to the NFL.

The Chargers coach revealed that he first spoke to Kaepernick about a role shortly after joining Los Angeles in January.

'We talked a little bit about it,' Harbaugh told USA Today

'He’s considering it. He was out of the country. He said he was going to get back to me. We haven’t reconnected since then. That was early, early in the year.'

He added: 'If that was ever the path he was to take, I think that would be tremendous. He’d be a tremendous coach, if that’s the path he chose.'

Kaepernick joined the 49ers shortly after the team appointed Harbaugh as head coach. Together they took San Francisco to Super Bowl XLVII and the NFC championship game the following season.

Harbaugh has supported Kaepernick during his apparent exile from the NFL, even arranging an open workout for the quarterback in 2022.

'He’s one of my favorite players that I’ve ever coached,' Harbaugh said. 'I love Colin.'

In 2019, Kaepernick settled a grievance with the NFL for an undisclosed amount after accusing owners of blackballing him in retaliation for the controversial protests.

Although Kaepernick remains an NFL outcast, commissioner Roger Goodell admitted in June 2021 that the league should have listened to players' concerns about racism sooner, adding that he encouraged teams to sign the former 49ers star.

'It's something I've trained my whole life for,' Kaepernick said this week. 'To be able to step back on the field, I think that would be a major moment, a major accomplishment for me. I think I could bring a lot to a team and help them win a championship.'
