Washington state has been ranked the most dangerous in America. 

WalletHub ranked all of the states in terms of safety - based on a combination of multiple factors. 

The scores took into account violent crime, property crime, traffic related fatalities and total law enforcement employees per capita. 

New Jersey was ranked first in terms of safety - followed by Wyoming New Hampshire, Idaho and New York.

Washington, nicknamed the 'Evergreen State', is known for its many forests, great lakes and stunning mountains.

While the state has plenty to boast about - including its natural features and high-tech industries, it has also become rampant in crime over recent years.

As one of the most socially liberal states in the country - Washington was amongst the first to de-criminalize recreational cannabis, same-sex marriage and physician-assisted suicide. 

It was also a site of extreme protests and rioting following the murder of George Floyd in 2020 and 2021.

People took to the streets of Seattle to participate in protests and sit-ins - which escalated to rioting and looting. 

Seattle's downtown saw broken windows, car fires, dozens of arrests and even a citywide curfew of 5pm that was enforced by the National Guard. 

Washington's property crime rate is the worst in the US - making it highly susceptible to burglaries. The state also has high rates of theft and larceny as well as kidnapping and abduction, according to a recent study.
