Veterans of Donald Trump's campaigns are welcoming the sudden jolt of new staff hires including the return of Corey Lewandowski, saying it signals Trump can recapture some of the swagger and spontaneity of his successful 2016 run.
Trump announced a surprise move Thursday to bring on Corey Lewandowski, who he fired a month before the convention in 2016, while adding several former Trump campaign veterans to his existing staff.
Although it comes at a time when Kamala Harris has seized momentum in the polls and enjoyed a lengthy press 'honeymoon,' Trump campaign aides have consistently denied the move constitutes a shakeup. But Trump added intrigue about what he had in mind when he publicly referred to Lewandowski as his 'personal envoy' – a title signifying a wide-ranging and as yet undefined portfolio.
'Trump 2024 can be the best and most successful Trump of all: he recalls the hunger, swagger, underdog, underestimated, joy on the job ethos of 2016, coupled with a four-year presidential record of prosperity and security, and overlaid with the accoutrements of a well-funded, organized, professionalized campaign structure that presents policy contrasts with Kamala,' former counselor to the president Kellyanne Conway told DailyMail.com.
Conway stepped in later in 2016 to become the first woman to successfully pilot a winning presidential campaign, and went on to advise Trump throughout his presidency.
Former President Donald Trump said Thursday that Corey Lewandowsky would serve as 'personal envoy,' injecting mystery into his precise role
She took encouragement from the recent onboarding of new hires who are veterans of his past campaigns who are ready to suit up again. It means Trump could get a range of guidance and was 'superstitious to get the gang back together.'
'The campaign has invested in the fundamentals (ground game, voter registration and turnout, polling, messaging, digital, fundraising' as well as the 'non-sexy parts of politics' including lawsuits, canvassing and 'election integrity,' she said. The goal is to have Trump run with the 'energy of an insurgent and the results of an incumbent.'
One longtime Trump advisor and former campaign official underlined that the change does not represent a staff 'shakeup' that would supplant campaign heads Chris LaCivita and Susie Wiles, who are credited with steering Trump through the primaries.
The official said Lewandowski would be 'advising senior leadership as we march to victory. He’s going to be part of that team that reports to Susie and Chris. The senior leadership remains unchanged.'
Corey Lewandowsky helmed Trump's 2016 from its first days, then left weeks before the Republican convention
Former counselor to the president Kellyanne Conway said the new moves could bring back some of the 'swagger' and 'underdog' feel of Trump's winning 2016 campaign
Trump during his marathon press conference at Bedminister Thursday if the staff moves were a shift in strategy.
'No, I think it's a sign of, we want to close it out. We had, we have great people. Susie is fantastic, as you know, and Chris is fantastic. They're leading it. Corey Lewandowski is coming in. He'll be, you know, personal envoy, or he'll be at some at some level,' Trump said.
'They're doing a great job,' he said, citing the 'horrific abuse we take' from what he called the 'fake news media.'
And he made clear he has no intention of backing off his blasts at Harris, even as the two battle for the support of suburban women. 'I think I'm entitled to personal attacks. I don't have a lot of respect for her. I don't have a lot of respect for her intelligence,' Trump said.
Lewandowski instigated the 'Let Trump be Trump' mantra of the era and titled his book after it.
Also coming on board are Taylor Budowich, who ran the super PAC MAGA, Inc., plus Alex Pfeiffer and Alex Bruesewitz from the PAC. Tim Murtaugh, who served as Trump's communications chief in 2020, is also coming on board.
One campaign officials called it 'just an addition to the campaign' and said Trump's statement made clear it was not a shakeup of the current staff.
Trump fired Lewandowski in 2016 after he was accused of assaulting a reporter. He did a stint as a political commentator and remained a sounding board for Trump. He was on hand for Trump's debate in Atlanta with President Joe Biden, flying there with Trump on the candidate's plane.
Aides didn't provide further explanation of his new 'envoy' role.
