Horrifying moment drunk driver runs over couple and their kids

Frightening footage shows the moment an out-of-control drunk driver swerved off the road and into a family of five in Brazil.

A surveillance camera captured the family crossing a street in Jabaquara, São Paulo on Saturday. 

The 34-year-old father, his 35-year-old wife and their three children have their backs turned when the driver of the pickup truck suddenly comes barreling at them, the footage shows.

The 54-year-old driver jumped the curb and plowed into the father before hitting his wife and two of the children. The eldest of the children, a nine-year-old girl, was not hit by the car.

The driver had to be rescued from the wreckage after his truck crashed through the gate of an auto repair shop 

The parents and their two youngest children were rushed to Doutor Arthur Ribeiro de Saboya Municipal Hospital.

The children and mother were treated and released, while the father remains hospitalized and in stable condition, the Jabaquara Department of Health said in a statement.

The driver had to be rescued from the wreckage after his truck crashed through the gate of an auto repair shop.

He was rushed to Ipiranga Hospital and remains hospitalized in stable condition in police custody.

The driver showed signs of drunkenness, according to the São Paulo State Public Security Department.

São Paulo Civil Police records showed that the driver had an expired driver's license and had been previously charged with drunken driving. 

According to the Department of Traffic, more than 13,000 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol in 2023. At least 3,000 drivers were arrested for drunk driving.
