Republican Ron Johnson reveals the main challenge Donald Trump faces in the 2024 presidential election

A lot of advice has been swirling in Republican circles suggesting Donald Trump now change campaign strategies by ditching his persisting attacks against rivals to focus more on policies.

But one of the former president's top allies told DailyMail.com that his strategy is sound and accused the media of causing any dips in polling or performance against Kamala Harris.

It's been nearly a month since Vice President Harris entered the 2024 race and she has still not held a press conference or participated in a sit-down interview with the press – and Trump's team is tired of the media giving the Democratic candidate a 'free pass.'

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wisc.) admitted that Trump should remain focused on policies but insisted Harris needs to be 'held accountable' by reporters for the policies of the Biden administration.

'The challenge that President Trump has – he's not really running against Kamala Harris,' Johnson said. 'He's running against some body the media has put on a pedestal and basically proclaimed the new messiah.'

'She won't be scrutinized, she won't be held accountable for the policies of the Biden administration. Just this vision of how great America can be, I guess,' the senator added when speaking to DailyMail.com at Trump Tower in Chicago, Illinois on Monday.

'That's hard to go up against the corporate, legacy media when they're doing that with a candidate, they're not asking any hard questions.'

Johnson, the Republican ranking member of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, joined fellow Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) for a press conference touting Trump's economic proposals at the former president's property in the host city of the Democratic National Convention.

Trump's surrogates are holding press conferences each day of the Convention to run counter programming against the Democrats.

Asked about the recent comments from Trump allies and Republican political strategists urging Trump to focus on policies instead of insults, Johnson said: 'Yeah, obviously I think we should be focusing on the contrast in policies, because what she's proposing, it's literally jaw dropping.'

He then tore into Harris' running mate Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz for his liberal ideologies.

'She already has the burden of selecting somebody who's obviously Communist Chinese apologist and lover, promoting all kinds of socialist type of policies, and then she comes out with those types of policies just confirm what people would suspect based on her pick,' the Wisconsin Republican told DailyMail.com.

'So again, it's a challenge when you have the media, though, totally focused on making sure that she wins,' he concluded.

Some allies and Republican strategists claim that Trump needs to dampen down the attacks and focus more on policy in the months ahead of the election in November – but surrogates say his strategy is fine

Meanwhile, Sen. Scott weighed-in and said he thought the campaign was doing a 'good job.'

'I think Trump has a message that resonates,' the Florida senator added. 'You look at these rallies. I mean, look at how many tens of thousands people show up, and nobody shows up to hers.'

'The fact that he can do a press conference and explain what he's doing, and she can't explain anything, right? So no, I think, think they're doing that fabulous job of running a great race,' he continued.

'They're talking about the issues. He has policy ideas that he can explain and defend.'
