A Colorado bakery has closed after 75 years in business, leaving locals devastated.

Home Style Bakery in Grand Junction served its last batch of sweet treats on Saturday.

When word of the business' impending closure spread, residents flocked to the bakery, leaving its owners of 50 years run off their feet.

Customers young and old waited patiently in a line that stretched out of the door for one last taste of their favorite delicacies.

'It's a national heritage site as far as I'm concerned,' John Rundle, who has been coming to the bakery since 1971, told CPR.

By 8:30am on August 17 the car park was full as desperate customers scrambled to join the line.

'I'm just hoping to get whatever's left,' regular customer Gwyn Nishimura said.

'Whatever I can get my hands on!'

Some customers decided to stock up on their favorites, since they won't be available again.

Dick Southwell told CPR he ordered a large batch of 'the best apple fritters in town.'

'It's dying art,' he said of the bakery's from-scratch methods.

'Everything seems to be the big stores nowadays. And the way they bake stuff just isn't the same.'

Others picked up boxes of cannolis, gingerbread men and chocolate chip brownies.

Owners Jan and Don Wilke bought Home Style Bakery from the previous owners in 1976.

'The relationship is everything you know, you can make the best product in the world, but if you don't have customers who appreciate it and return,' Jan told Western Slope Now

'We know so many people by first name and even the ones I don't know by name I know by sight. So it's a very wonderful feeling.'

The couple decided to close the bakery to have more time to devote to family concerns.

'We have health issues in our family that need to be addressed and need more time for,' Jan told the outlet.

Jan and Don's son Andrew told the outlet about his treasured childhood memories at the bakery.

'My first crib was a 140-quart mixing bowl. I grew up in the bakery.

'I used to come out and greet everybody and I would after the end of the day, I would crawl under the freezers and look for the pennies that people dropped.'

It comes amid a slew of restaurant and store closures across the US - many as a result of the rising costs of food and labor.

Popular Italian restaurant Buca di Beppo filed for bankruptcy earlier this month - just days after it abruptly shut 13 underperforming locations.

World of Beer Bar & Kitchen was named among the fastest growing restaurant chains in the US in 2013.

It also filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy this month, saying it owed suppliers as much as $50 million.

Companies are battling falling sales as Americans increasingly eat out less after two years of punishing price rises.
