Noah Lyles has claimed he was concerned about spreading his Covid to other athletes during the medal ceremony for the 200m final - despite hugging at least two of his competitors following the race.
After the favorite for the race failed to win gold - instead picking up a bronze medal - he revealed he had Covid, with Lyles' coach later telling the AP that the sprinter battled through a 102-degree fever.
Nonetheless, Lyles was seen hugging gold medal winner Letsile Tebogo after the race and also embraced Team USA teammate Kenny Bednarek.
But he's admitted he was worried for others' safety as he collected his bronze medal.
'I wanted to get my medal but we were very wary of not interfering with - because these are older people who are giving me the medals,' he began on the TODAY show.

Lyles was able to attend the medal ceremony but stood far away from his competitors
He said he was 'wary' of being around others after the race given his Covid diagnosis
'We asked the IOC if they were OK with it, anybody who was presenting. Even the other athletes that were getting their medals, we wanted to make sure that they were aware, that they felt comfortable with me even showing up.'
Ultimately, Lyles did attend the medal ceremony but stood far away from the other two medalists - a stark contrast from the way he, Kishane Thompson and Fred Kerley closely posed together for a picture following the 100m final.
Lyles also wore a mask before and after the race and further detailed his bout with Covid on TODAY.
Lyles tested positive for Covid two days before the 200m final on August 8.
The sprinter said he was moved to another hotel and was checked on by a doctor 'every hour' as he battled the sickness.
He also said he and his team checked with the IOC regarding his eligibility for the 200m final, and they were told he was allowed to run as long as he was quarantined beforehand.

Ultimately, Lyles did not achieve the gold he craved in the 200m but is still proud of the fact that he medaled with Covid.
'Even catching Covid, it's like OK, I've gone through asthma and sickness throughout my whole career this is just another day in the life of Noah Lyles essentially,' he said.
'Trying to fight through another hurdle to get over.'
Lyles had been set to participate in the 4x100 relay after the 200m, but pulled out due to his health.
Days later, he was seen dancing at a Paris nightclub on the Sunday of the Paris closing ceremony.
