Vivek Ramaswamy reveals he has 'something in common' with Kamala Harris - and it has to do with border security

Vivek Ramaswamy isn't sure why Vice President Kamala Harris doesn't place a higher priority on securing the border as a fellow child of legal immigrants.

The former 2024 Republican presidential primary candidate told DailyMail.com that policies put forward by Harris and Democrats are barreling the U.S. toward becoming a third world country.

Ramaswamy is the son of Indian immigrants and Harris mother is from India and father is fromJamaica. If elected, she would be the first woman and person of Asian descent to serve at the helm of the White House.

'Kamala and I share something in common in that we're both the kids of immigrants who left third world nations to be here,' Ramaswamy noted during an interview in Trump Tower in Chicago on Thursday.

Harris is speaking Thursday night in wrapping up the Democratic National Convention where she officially was nominated as the party's candidate for November's election after just a month of officially being in the race.

One of the only policy proposals Harris has put forward so far would implement price controls that would fix the cost of food amid rising inflation that has left many families struggling to afford groceries.

But this idea was immediately slammed by Republicans as a socialist policy that is used in countries – like Venezuela – where migrants are fleeing abysmal conditions to immigrate to the U.S.

Ramaswamy warned against this policy, claiming it would turn the U.S. into the countries the rest of the world are fleeing.

'Sadly, we're seeing the United States of America, parts of it certainly, devolve into being a third world nation,' Ramaswamy said in reference to such policies.

The millionaire biotech entrepreneur added: 'And I think that that's something that we have to change before we actually create the very policies that recreate what countless people around the world were trying to escape when they left to come to the United States.'

On the third day of the Democratic Convention on Wednesday, speakers were brought out to talk about the southern border crisis.

Most said that it was possible to secure the border from illegal immigration while also allowing in the thousands who claim asylum daily when coming to the U.S.

But Ramaswamy says this is a work around where Harris and her surrogates and campaign can avoid taking a real stance on immigration.

He said Harris' 'entire campaign' is based on 'saying words without saying anything of substance.'

The Ohioan former presidential candidate also said that the majority of migrants claiming asylum don't fall under the actual definition of as 'asylum seekers.'

'Most asylum seekers don't have an actual valid basis for providing proof of asylum,' Ramaswamy explained.

'So if we just asked a lot of the people to provide proof of asylum, literally documented proof that you meet the criteria, then actually 90 percent of those cases would be denied right off the bat. So that's just one easy step they could take right now.'

Ramaswamy's name has been floated as a potential member of Donald Trump's cabinet if he wins in November – and some have said a border hawk position would best fit him.

'It's my lesson in life, is that when you do something, might as well do something that has a big impact on the most important problems,' he said of what is in store for his future.

Other than the cabinet, others have floated that Ramaswamy could take Sen. J.D. Vance's Senate seat in Ohio if Trump wins and he becomes the vice president.
