Walmart is set to give customers of its subscription program free burgers as part of its new partnership with a major fast food chain.

Walmart+, the grocery giant's $98-a-year subscription service, will offer its users a 25 percent discount on all orders and free Whoppers every three months as parts of a new deal with Burger King

The retailer launched its subscription program four years ago in a bid to compete with Amazon Prime, which costs $139 a year.

Walmart+ offers similar benefits, such as free shipping and same-day grocery delivery.

Burger King will be looking to use the partnership to reel in customers put off by years of fast food price rises.

Walmart has announced an exciting new deal offering free burgers

'This unique benefit is designed to save members time and money, catering to their fast-paced lifestyles where grocery shopping, meal planning and cooking may not always be feasible,' Walmart said of the offer on Thursday.

The Burger King benefit 'serves as a practical, cost-effective solution to accommodate dining preferences and busy schedules,' the company added.

To get a free Whopper Walmart+ members must link their account with a free Burger King Royal Perks profile.

Orders must then be placed through Burger King's app.

The 25 percent discount will be available immediately but the free Whopper deal will begin in September.

The partnership is another direct challenge to Amazon, which has partnered with GrubHub to give its members the food delivery app's subscription for free.

Despite Walmart's efforts it still trails Amazon in terms of subscriber numbers.

Neither company give specific breakdowns of their memberships but recently third-party analysis states that Walmart has around 29 million members, far fewer than Amazon's staggering 184 million subscribers.

Walmart recently posted strong earnings results for the second quarter, alleviating fears about the state of the wider economy.

The grocery chain, often seen as a bellwether for the overall economy, said its US sales rose 4.2 percent in the three months ending in June.

The strong profit and sales figures suggested the company was ‘not seeing a weaker consumer overall,’ CEO Doug McMillon told analysts on the earnings call last week.

Walmart's stock is up more than 30 percent year to date.

The fast food deal comes as major fast food chains are battling to lure in customers who are fed up with price rises.

McDonald's reported a surprise fall in sales in the last quarter for the first time since 2020 when the pandemic closed stores and millions stayed home. Profits also slumped by 12 percent.

Generally, chains are reeling from falling customer numbers, so have been rolling out cheap offers in the last several months.

Burger King's $5 Your Way Meal was the first to hit restaurants in June.

McDonald's also offered a $5 deal, which has been extended at most restaurants until the end of the summer.

Starbucks also made a surprise entry into the value war with a coffee and food breakfast combo from $5.
